Edward Nersesovich Tosunyan was born on March 8, 1936 in Tbilisi. Graduated from the Georgian Polytechnic Institute in 1960 with a degree in civil engineer. But he called himself "architect", putting the deepest meaning in this word: as a rule, he himself was the architect and designer of his projects, and he himself supervised their construction. Combining more than one profession, he devoted his entire life to architecture.

For 55 years of work, Edward Tosunyan presented Armenia and Russia with many pieces of architecture, each of which is unique in its own way. Among the architect's largest works are the Gyumri airport in Gyumri, the Erebuni airport in Yerevan, as well as the central sports stadium Hrazdan in Yerevan, which seats 70 thousand spectators and is the only two-tiered stadium in Armenia.

Another striking example of a contribution to architecture was the creation of a series of residential buildings A1-451KP, for which Edward Tosunyan was awarded the Prize of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. After the 11.2 magnitude earthquake in Spitak in 1988, the houses of this series were the only ones that survived in the city.

The same thing happened in Leninakan (now Gyumri). Here the earthquake was felt less, up to 8.2 points, but the city was almost completely destroyed. Only a few buildings survived, among them the airport created by Edward Tosunyan. It saved thousands of lives by maintaining communication with other parts of the country, allowing the delivery of medicines and supplies to rebuild the city.

The American Biographical Institute included E. N. Tosunyan in the International Directory of Outstanding Leaders, and the Spets-Address Publishing House included in the encyclopedia The Best People of Russia for 2004.
