Siza compared the future building to a restless animal, whose paws, however, are chained to the ground. It is ready to take off at any moment - and then, perhaps, it will swallow up the Serpentine River itself.
The curved shape consists of interlocking wooden beams. This frame covers a translucent material that forms a canopy that ends 1.3 m above the ground. This should give the impression that the building is floating. The rectangular section of the red brick floor is contrasted with the curving volume of the pavilion.
Each panel of translucent cladding will contain a lamp burning around the clock.
The pavilion, furnished with furniture also designed by Siza and Souto de Moura, will serve as a café during the day and a venue for various events at night.
