The Green Fortress ensemble near the main city square should help create jobs in the ancient city in crisis: like the entire territory of the former GDR, 1200-year-old Magdeburg struggles to compete with the developed western part of the country.
The architect-artist wanted to create an “oasis of humanity” in the city: curving lines of walls, large areas of greenery, including those on roofs, golden balls on turrets should contrast with the severity and dullness of traditional streets.
There are no two identical multi-colored columns, doors or even door handles. All lines are curved, all shapes are as close to natural as possible.
The complex will house 55 apartments, a kindergarten, a hotel, a shop and offices on an area of 11,000 square meters. m. It cost the city 27.1 million euros.
