The new building is named "The Spiral Tower" and will appear on the outskirts of the city, near the village of Sant Adria del Besos. On an area of 27,000 sq. m will accommodate not only lecture halls and seminars and administrative premises of the university, but also shops and restaurants.
The project is a multi-part volume, which outwardly seems to consist of strips of floors curved at sharp angles. In fact, the building can be divided into a three-storey stylobate with a triangular atrium and a 48-meter tower (11 tiers) growing out of it. The floors of both parts smoothly turn into ramps and vice versa, so the whole structure can be viewed as one giant continuous floor. The facades will be covered with double glazing.
Construction work will begin in the summer of 2006 and will be completed in 2008. The estimated budget is only 28 million euros, but it seems doubtful that such a large-scale construction will be cheap.
