Rafael Vignoli, Rem Koolhaas, the Canadian workshop Saucier + Perotte and others also participated in the competition held by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

The future institute will be part of the Abuja Technology Village, a huge 1,000-hectare area built up by research institutes and high-tech manufacturing companies.

The university was founded on the initiative of the Nelson Mandela Foundation with funds from the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the International Finance Corporation. It is aimed at residents not only of Nigeria itself, but also of the entire part of the mainland south of the Sahara Desert.

Fuksas' project, worth 360 million dollars, connects various components of African culture: these are adobe towers of a characteristic red hue due to the color of the soil, ornamental motifs borrowed from traditional textiles, symbols of various African regions, etc. Common materials are widely used - clay and wood, as well as - environmentally friendly, energy-saving modern technologies.

Faculty buildings, all different from each other, will house laboratories, lecture halls and seminars. The library and administration building are planned in the southern part of the complex. The existing landscape of the site - the territory of the closed mine - is well adapted for the construction of the stadium. A park will be laid out to the north of the institute, connecting it to the city center.
