It is located on the territory of the Victoria Hospital, and its function is to supplement the therapy courses that patients undergo in the main hospital building, consultations with psychologists, nutritionists, cosmetologists, a library of special literature and communicate with other patients in an informal, relaxing atmosphere.

Thus, the famous historian and theorist of architecture Charles Jenks continues the program of building such centers, realizing the idea of his late wife Maggie Kezwick Jenks, who died in 1995 from cancer. The architects, friends of this married couple, act as the authors of the projects. Besides Hadid, these are Frank Gehry (his Maggie Center in Dundee opened in 2003), Richard Murphy (1996 in Edinburgh), architects of the Page / Park workshop (2002 in Glasgow and 2005 in Inverness). In the future, similar institutions are planned outside Scotland - in Oxford, London, Cambridge, Nottingham, Swansea and other cities. They will be designed by Richard Rogers, Daniel Libeskind, Piers Gog, Kisho Kurakawa.

The special position of the Maggie Center in Kirkcaldy is due to the fact that this is the first building implemented in the UK by Zaha Hadid, who, despite its Iraqi origin, is considered a British architect. This small building, worth about £ 1 million, raised by private donors and community organizations, came into existence 26 years after she opened her workshop in London.

The site chosen for the construction was not very convenient for the rehabilitation center - the edge of an asphalted car park that drops off over a ravine - an old coal mine left from the time when mining was carried out here. It is now overgrown with trees, and is the only green spot on the entire hospital grounds. Therefore, Hadid made the main facade facing this grove, and not the twelve-story tower of the hospital. The building of the Center itself resembles an origami figurine folded from black paper: black polyurethane with the addition of shiny silicone inclusions was used as the covering of the external walls. In wet weather, it seems that the building is formed from the same asphalt as the space around it.

The main - southern - facade, facing the trees, is completely glazed. Unlike the external appearance of the structure - a dark volume with sharp corners, the interior is dominated by white color, an abundance of light and soft curves of the walls. Separate offices for administration and doctors' offices are located along the northern wall. At the same time, according to the architect, their doors should remain open most of the time. The rest of the space is divided between the kitchen and the library.

Such a building, finely tuned to the needs of patients and staff, reveals Hadid's talent in a new light: as a very thoughtful and sensitive architect, rather than a cold formalist interested only in the evolution of visual images.
