The winners were Spanish architects Luis M. Mansilla and Emilio Tuñón with their project for the MUSAC (Museo de arte contemporáneo de Castilla y León) Museum of Contemporary Art of Castile and Leon in León.
The building is a series of seemingly independent - but nevertheless interconnected exhibition halls, which allow exhibitions of various types and sizes to be held in the museum; all the rooms are of irregular shape, one smoothly flows into the other, the halls offer views into the "suites" of neighboring rooms. The exhibition space is enlivened by the active use of glazed openings in the ceilings and the inclusion of small patios in the interior of the museum.
The large courtyard in front of the main entrance of the museum is surrounded on three sides by the walls of a building made of multi-colored glass panels and is intended for various social events.
Finalists for the award included Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield, UN Stuido and Rudy Ricciotti.
The jury, chaired by Richard Burdett, also awarded the traditional award for emerging architects. It was won by Slovenian architects Matija Bevk and Vasa J. Perovic for the Mathematical Corps of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana.
The awards ceremony will take place on 14 May this year at the famous Ludwig Mies van der Rohe German Pavilion in Barcelona.
