The Parkrand, built by MVRDV in the western part of Amsterdam, demonstrates the other side of the desire to improve the quality of social housing. This residential complex is located on the border of Endracks Park and a large development area of the 1950-1960s. The houses there could be compared with the Moscow “Khrushchevs”, with one important difference: almost all tenants who once moved into new apartments in these buildings left them and moved to private houses in the suburbs. The area of 140,000 is now home to almost exclusively immigrants from Morocco and Turkey.

It is characterized by a high crime rate and a general atmosphere of instability. To solve the problems of this area, it was decided to replace the old houses with new ones or to renovate them. Also, in order to improve the image of the district and attract residents from different social strata there, it was proposed to build “superior comfort” houses there, in which both cheap and elite apartments could be found.

One of the first “pilot” residential complexes of this type was the MVRDV house. It consists of five separate volumes, united by a common platform (where there are service enterprises, shops, etc.) and a strip of two-storey "penthouses" on top, at the level of the eleventh and twelfth floors. Thus, between the massive "towers" there were huge openings, through which the visual connection of the rest of the houses of microdistrict 9 with the park is preserved.

At the same time, "Parkrand" is large enough to set a new tone for the development of the surrounding area, raising it to a new quality level. Its exterior walls are painted in dark gray, which contrasts with the bright white interior surfaces of openings and courtyard facades. A kind of semi-private, semi-public spaces are arranged in the openings, where residents of the house and their children can spend their free time. They are named "nursery", "living room" and "dining room" and are designed by the designer Richard Hutten.

The Carabanchel 16 complex on the southeastern outskirts of Madrid is located in a new dense residential area; the main material used in this residential area is plastered brick.

The Foreign Office Akitects building immediately stands out against this background, as its façade is completely covered by bamboo sun screens. They are fixed on metal folding structures, working according to the "accordion" principle. Each of the residents can fold and open these peculiar blinds, depending on weather conditions and time of day. Therefore, the house does not have a frozen appearance: every day the motif of the dark niches of the balconies and the light spots of the unfolded bamboo screens will change.

Carabanchel 16 stands on a platform covered with bright green turf: underneath is an underground garage for residents of its 88 apartments. The roof has solar panels used to heat the water; the width of the building is only 13.4 m, so each apartment faces both east and west and can be easily ventilated without using an air conditioner. The bamboo used for the screens is a relatively cheap material and can be easily replaced as needed. Thus, FOA has proven the feasibility of a green and attractive residential building project with affordable apartments.
