The building occupies the northern part of Liangzhu Cultural Park and serves as a repository for a collection of various archaeological finds. All of them belong to the Neolithic culture that existed in this region around 3000 BC. e. and bearing the name of the city of Liangzhu.

The landscape of the park, in which the water space plays the main role, gradually brings the visitor to the museum complex, built on a low hill. The geometric shapes of the structure contrast with the soft lines of the landscape.

The viewer enters the museum across the bridge; its building consists of four rectangular blocks of different heights, but the same width of 18 m. Each of them has an inner courtyard, allowing to link together separate exhibition halls; in these small green areas, the visitor can take a break between viewing the exhibition. To the south of the main building of the museum, on an artificial lake, there is a small island used for temporary exhibitions; it is connected to the territory of the museum by a pedestrian bridge.
