The customer was the Make It Right (MIR) Foundation, founded by actor Brad Pitt last year. This organization is trying to change the catastrophic situation in the poor areas of the city. Most of the houses there are no longer subject to restoration, the government does almost nothing to solve the problems of local residents, and the latter do not have the means to take any independent action.

So Pitt invested $ 5 million of his own money in his fund, and also bought a house in New Orleans to monitor the situation on the ground. He then brought in 13 architects, mostly American, to design affordable and sustainable homes for the City's 9th District. The new housing will be sold or rented to local residents.

MVRDV offered five cottage options based on the typical New Orleans type of timber house with verandas on the street and courtyard façades.

At the same time, the new housing will be able to withstand even severe flooding: one of the MVRDV projects will float in this case, others will have a bend in the middle, allowing some of the premises to remain above the flood level, and others will stand on an artificial slope. A separate project is designed for use by people who move only in a wheelchair.

The most attention of residents and the press was attracted by the "oblique", or "inclined" house with a bend in the middle. At first it was taken as a joke, but the Dutch architects explained that it was a perfectly realistic project. He will have two verandas, raised to the level of the second floor, from where it will be possible to observe the surroundings. It will be possible to park a car under the house, and - using this shaded space - there will be a cooling and rainwater collection system.

Construction should begin next spring, and the first houses will be commissioned in summer 2008.

Also participating in the Make It Right Foundation program are, among other architects, Shigeru Ban, David Adjaye, Tom Mayne's Morphosis workshop.
