Residential estate for developer CapitaLand Residential should set a new standard for housing in Singapore. Nowadays, complexes of several closely spaced high-rise buildings prevail there; Dutch architects, on the contrary, have located 32 six-storey buildings in the middle of a park with an area of 8 hectares. The buildings will be "arranged" in regular hexagons; the resulting six courtyards are an intermediate phase between private and public space.
It is also planned to develop the idea of a "vertical village": landscaping at ground level will complement the gardens inside the buildings and on their roofs. The infrastructure for the residents of the 1,000 apartments that will be part of the new complex will also be immersed in Singapore's characteristic lush vegetation.
In the case of the Rotterdam project, we are talking about a "vertical city" - this is exactly the type of construction that the architects of OMA refer to as the new multifunctional complex De Rotterdam, which is planned to be built in the port of the city, in the Vilhelminapir district. It is named after a ship that operated regular flights between the Netherlands and the United States at the beginning of the 20th century (its berth was located on the site of a new building) and transported thousands of European emigrants across the ocean.
De Rotterdam will reach a height of 135 m. Its separate blocks will house offices, a hotel, apartments, cafes, a cinema and a shopping center. With such a functional variety, there will be a liveliness on any day of the week, 24 hours a day.
