For the architect himself, the victory came as a surprise: he had been waiting for it in previous years, but this time he was sure that he would not be chosen. The jury of the award noted Nouvel's courage as an architect, his desire for experimentation, for innovation in all its forms.

Unlike the works of most modern "leaders of the profession", Jean Nouvel's projects are not united by a common style or stable formal motives. Each building, according to the architect, is an adventure and also a result of research. It is influenced by climate, wind, colors of surrounding buildings. All this imposes certain restrictions, but without these restrictions, architecture does not exist: it turns into sculpture.

Nouvel deliberately avoids "generalized" buildings, which, in his opinion, prevail in modern architecture. He creates buildings with different atmospheres, different vocabulary and colors. His desire is to create a building suitable for this particular place at the moment. For him, buildings are living beings, and he likes their dissimilarity.

Jean Nouvel became world famous in 1981, when he won an architectural competition for the design of the building of the Institute of the Arab World in Paris. Its extraordinary façade with opening and closing "diaphragms" regulates the illumination in the rooms: this solution combines traditional Arabic ornament and modern technology.

Now his Paris workshop employs 140 people, and branches of his office are open in London, Copenhagen, New York, Madrid and Barcelona. In total, its employees are now working on more than forty projects in thirteen countries. The architect hopes that receiving the Pritzker Prize will help the realization of his new works - even more daring and innovative. At the same time, Nouvel already has a lot of professional awards: he is the Commander of the French Order of Arts, winner of the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale, the Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Borromini Prize, Japanese Praemium Imperiale, etc.

The presentation of the bronze medal - a commemorative sign of the Pritzker Prize - to Jean Nouvel, the second Frenchman (after Christian de Portzamparc) in the list of its laureates, will take place on June 2, 2008 at the Washington Library of Congress.
