Designed by architect André Waterkeyn, a 103-meter replica of a crystalline iron molecule opened (along with the entire World's Fair) in April 1958 in the Belgian capital. The Atomium symbolized technological progress and belief in the future achievements of mankind - in particular, in the field of nuclear physics and the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.
This structure, 165 billion times larger than its prototype (for example, the diameter of each of the spheres - "atoms" - 18 m), consisted of a steel frame, sheathed with aluminum panels. During the exhibition, scientific exhibitions devoted to the use of atomic energy in the USSR, the USA and other countries of the world were demonstrated in its fields; in the upper ball there was a restaurant. After six months of operation of EXPO-1958, the Atomium was supposed to be dismantled, but, due to the love of the public, it was decided to leave it in its place - in Heisel Park.
Temporary exhibitions are now held in the Atomium spheres, and an observation deck is located at the topmost one. You can get there using escalators installed in the connecting cylinders of the structure. The structure was not designed for long-term use, so it recently had to be refurbished, replacing the rusted aluminum cladding with top quality stainless steel panels.
This year, various festive events are planned to mark the anniversary of the Atomium, and all of its peers will be admitted to this unusual museum free of charge.
