The new building on the shores of the Limfjord fjord, in the city where Jorn Utzon spent his childhood and youth, was built according to the project of the architect himself, executed in collaboration with his son Kim.
The roofs of the pavilions around the courtyard resemble the bottoms of boats. The topic of shipbuilding is very important for Utzon's work: his father was an engineer who developed ship projects, and the time spent by the future architect at the Aalborg shipyard greatly influenced his subsequent work. This, in particular, is the story of the first exhibition held in the new Center, dedicated to the most famous building of the master - the building of the Sydney Opera House.
Along with exhibition halls, the complex has an area of 2,400 sq. m there is an architectural library, a hall for concerts and conferences, an archive of Jorn Utzon's drawings and projects. The center will regularly host classes in the workshop of the Faculty of Architecture of Aalborg University, as well as various seminars and symposia devoted to the problems of architecture, design and shaping.
Among the projects of Utzon, winner of the 2003 Pritzker Prize, are the theater in Zurich (1964), the parliamentary complex in Kuwait damaged during the Gulf War (1972-1982), the Bagswehr Church in Copenhagen (1973-1976).
