The customer was Sinosteel, the largest steel company owned by the state: this corporation wished to have a headquarters in a "landmark", notable structure in the new area of the booming port of Tianjin.

Sinosteel International Plaza will include a 358 m high office building and an 88-meter hotel located on a green hill that hides the hotel's infrastructure.

Young architects, already known outside of China for their daring designs, have decided to move away from the glass prism towers typical of business districts in most cities in the world. Instead, they proposed constructing structures with a load-bearing façade cut through by hexagonal windows in five different sizes; the resulting structure is reminiscent of both the organic honeycomb shape and the hexagonal opening motif typical of traditional Chinese architecture. The buildings themselves are rectangular blocks with rounded edges.

The use of the load-bearing façade allowed almost all floors of the buildings to be given a free plan, which will not only ensure the most rational use of space, but also facilitate possible future redevelopment.

The location and size of the openings, which at first glance seem almost chaotic, were coordinated by the MAD architects with the prevailing wind directions and the angle of incidence of the sun's rays. Thanks to this, in both buildings, heat loss in winter and heating of facades in summer will be minimized.
