According to Jose Acebillo, restoration and innovation is not so much an architectural issue as a political one. Whether to restore or demolish the building depends on the decision of the authorities. For example, the dismantling of the Moscow hotel was a political decision. Or the restoration of the center of Warsaw after the war was also a decision from above.

The same applies to new construction. Old and new in modern European cities are always in conflict. This contradiction becomes especially pronounced when it comes to the construction of high-rise buildings. Many consider high-rise buildings to be a consequence of globalization, but José Acebillo has a different opinion. In the Middle Ages, high Gothic cathedrals were erected to emphasize the power of the church, feudal lords built high castles as a symbol of their power. Religious, political, and today economic power - they all need to be expressed through high-rise buildings. Now the world is ruled by economic forces, so modern skyscrapers are office buildings.

Another aspect in the relationship of conservation and innovation is the reuse of buildings. A prime example of this is the Tate Modern, whose building was not used in any way before the renovation, and now is one of the leading galleries in London. Jose Acebillo believes that the big cities have the same problems, but their solutions should be different, it is important to preserve the identity of the city. In his works, he adheres to exactly this principle. So, when designing an urban area in Krasnodar, the architect highlighted the green landscape of the city, for him it was important to protect trees, rather than buildings. This decision is specific to Krasnodar and will not make sense, for example, for Barcelona. Three new high-rise buildings are under construction in Krasnodar, the task of the architect in this case was to combine them with the existing urban development, which is much smaller in scale. Acebillo's idea is to create 4 more buildings, which, together with the existing buildings, will create belts around the towers, and thus enter into dialogue with them.

As the chief architect of Barcelona, José Acebillo has created several projects for this city, which are also excellent solutions specific to Barcelona. 5 years ago, a project was created to restore life in one of the districts, which consisted of adding an elliptical hotel building with glass facades to a multi-temporal development that combines Gothic and Art Nouveau. As a result, the building turned out to be completely neutral and - entered into a dialogue with the historical buildings.

Another project for Barcelona is the transformation of an industrial zone into spaces for economic activity. The idea behind the project was to develop a new policy for public spaces - a large number of squares, parks and public buildings. One of the latest projects in Barcelona is the new central train station area. As a modern transport hub, the station is designed on five levels - a bus station, regional trains, metro, residential and office space and a large park that adjoins the station.

Jose Acebillo developed a new urban project for the city of Kazan - this project is held under the slogan "Back to the center". The fact is, says Jose Acebillo, that the historical center of Kazan is now a desert, and people live 20 km away from it in terrible conditions. The city's periphery is built up with buildings from the Soviet period. The task of the architect was to unite the center and the periphery. Acebillo saw this unification through the solution of the problem of movement, i.e. creation of roads and parking lots for cars. Zoning of residential and commercial areas was also thought out and a large boulevard was created, raised above the ground due to the proximity of water.

Jose Acebillo is an architect sensitive to the interests of the city and its inhabitants. Each city is individual for him, does not look like another and will never be similar. He has his own approach to each city, well thought out and aimed at a comprehensive solution to the problems of this city. The old and the new in Asebillo's projects enter into dialogue, and conservation and innovation complement each other.
