The area of 65 hectares along the Tsarigradskoe highway will be turned over the next 10 years into a new administrative and economic center of the city. In addition to government offices and office complexes, there will be sports facilities, an exhibition center, a "knowledge center" and housing.
The project by Dominique Perrault is an urban planning concept: the architect emphasizes that in his plan he set only the spatial boundaries of the future development, but not the appearance of specific buildings.
He abandoned the construction of skyscrapers, presenting instead belts of medium and low-rise buildings, creating cohesive volumes reminiscent of a hilly landscape. The connection with the natural environment was for Perrault one of the main tasks in the design: the "axis" of the development will be the park, which stretches across the entire new area. At the two ends of this wide green lane there will be traffic interchanges serving Sofia City.
In addition to Perrault, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Massimiliano Fuksas and other architects took part in the competition.
