The building is located in the Arctic Circle, in the Hamarey municipal district, next to the farm where Gamsun spent his childhood and adolescence, and not far from the house where he lived in his declining years.

The center (in fact, a museum) was founded under the motto “Building as a body: a battlefield of invisible forces”. Thus, both in the building itself and in its filling (exposition, library, hall for conferences and lectures), the complexity of the structure and "principle of work" of human consciousness should have been reflected - one of the main themes of the writer's work. Hall conceived his construction as "an archetypal and intensified compression of the spirit in space and light", as "the embodiment of Hamsun's character by means of architecture." All these ideas are reflected, among other things, in, at first glance, window openings and balconies that randomly break through the resinous ebony facades.

The complex includes exhibition spaces, a library with a reading room, a cafe, as well as a hall for 230 seats, located in a separate volume and connected to the main building by an overhead passage. This hall was added to the project at the last stage of development (for various reasons, it took about 10 years between the preparation of the initial version and the allocation of public funds for the construction of the Center) and is also designed to be used by the residents of Hamarey for various events.

The "core" of the 6-storey building is an elevator shaft enclosed in a case made of perforated brass sheets. It penetrates all levels of the building and opens onto the roof, where a small garden is arranged, protected from the wind by a bamboo fence. The most important role in the interior is played by the staircase, which creates endless diagonal lines and directions of views. In the process of ascent, the visitor is exposed to unusual spatial configurations of the premises, as well as exits to balconies and window openings, introducing the amazingly beautiful landscapes of the Nurlan region inside the building, which became one of the sources of inspiration for Knut Hamsun.
