This is a complex that will include administrative premises, storage facilities, restoration workshops and exhibition halls of the National Gallery, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design and the Museum of Modern Art (the Museum of Architecture, which is also part of the National Museum, already has its own building). The construction will appear in the harbor of Oslo, on the site previously occupied by the West Station - Westbahnen; its construction will be part of a wider program to revitalize the city's coastal zone. This urban development plan also includes the Snohetta Opera House and the yet to be realized Munch Museum and the new library.

The 6 best designs for the National Museum building were selected from 237 projects submitted for the competition. They will be finalized during the second stage, which will end with the announcement of the winner in March 2010, and only then will we know the names of all participants: the condition of anonymity is strictly observed.

But so far, the works for the competition are surprising in their unoriginality. They seem to represent all possible typical variants of a public building in the mainstream of restrained neo-modernism. There is a white "box" (project No. 203 "Urban canvas"), a dark opaque structure of rectangular blocks - probably with facades made of corten steel (project No. 148 "Again in black"), two similar buildings - with matte glass walls (project No. 147 "Urban Transformation") and with a facade made of rough concrete or natural stone (project No. 164 forum artis). The list is completed by two options that play up the contrast between glazing and opaque sections of the walls; they differ in the use of dark (project no. 209 "Trüleesken") and light (project no. 216 m_box) metal panels.
