“The most beautiful house with a brick facade” is perhaps the most democratic competition of all. Anyone can nominate an object for the main prize in the amount of 100 thousand rubles - the owner of a country house, an architect, a builder, a developer, and even the best friend of any of them. The area of the nominated object can also be any, as well as the location, the style in which it is built, and the cost of implementation. The only condition that applies to houses is indicated in the name of the competition itself - brick or ceramic tiles must be present in the decoration of the facades of any of the presented objects. And whether the architect used these materials successfully or unsuccessfully, the people's jury will decide - the winner of the "Most beautiful house with a brick facade" is the house that gets the most votes in the course of Internet voting. Leading architectural publications also choose their favorite among all brick buildings of the year. And for the second year in a row, the voice of the people and the opinion of critics diverge radically.

However, not only this seemed to the guests of the second awards ceremony well-known. The prize was awarded in the same place as last year, and the same persons were leading it and announcing the results. The feeling of déjà vu reached its climax when the winning project was shown to the public. The leader of the Internet voting was the house in Barvikha of the Moscow architectural bureau "Fourth Dimension". A paraphrase of Frank L. Wright's famous "house over a waterfall", it is remarkably similar to that of Portner Architects, which won the top prize last year. As it turned out a little later, it was even finished with the same material (Terra ceramic façade bricks) as the winner of 2008.

The house in Barvikha captivates with precisely found proportions and tastefully selected materials. Its impressive volume is successfully concealed by heavy flat roofs with high chimneys of fireplaces and strongly extended cornices. Of course, Wright's terraced composition has been brought in line with the climatic conditions of the Moscow region: the house is more assembled and compact, although it is not devoid of such primordially "southern" elements as, for example, small outdoor pools. The authors do not hide their love for the classics of modernism, considering him the most talented and subtle connoisseur of brick. And if in Russia country houses are built mainly from this material, the architects believe, then to design in the spirit of Wright means to create one hundred percent win-win and at the same time high-quality architecture. Obviously, this position is shared by a large part of the audience of the competition: 2,166 votes were given for the "Fourth Dimension" cottage, which allowed the house in Barvikha to significantly break away from all its competitors.

But the leader of the voting of architectural critics was the "Dutch" house in Samara, designed by the bureau "Pastushenko and Samogorova". He was given their preference by as many as four professional publications. This very original in its "tradition" project was first noticed in the fall of last year at the exhibition "Under the Roof of a House", where it received the 1st place. A simple and elegant composition is built on the basis of two "interlocked" houses in the recognizable Dutch style, with narrow "street" ends and stepped ends. These two blocks - residential and sports - are connected to the central volume with a flat exploited roof, which can be used as a summer terrace. The architects themselves describe the concept of this cottage as "modernism in a conservative shell."Project Russia magazine awarded this house for the "organically manifested material properties in it" - and, indeed, what else, if not brick, can such wonderful "pediments" be made of? The Samara Dutch house was awarded a diploma from Archi.ru for “courage in using historical styles” - as you know, from this path it is very easy to fall into eclecticism and copying.

In recent years, Samara has generally become very generous with unusual and high-quality architectural structures, especially in the suburban sector. Thus, another Samara house, designed by the St. Petersburg team "A. Len", was awarded within the framework of the competition by the portal "Archi.ru" and the publishing house "Salon-press". In particular, "Archi.ru" noted the fast and dynamic appearance of this building for its flexibility and "confident command of the language of modernism."

The bunker house or the hood house of the SALTO architectural office from Estonia marked by the Tatlin magazine sharply differed from all possible interpretations “in styles”. Its volume is formed by a broken steel roof, from one side dropping to the ground and covering the fully glazed facade.

Contributing to the promotion of all kinds of ceramic materials in construction, the competition for the best house with a brick facade is also a very revealing cut of modern suburban architecture. And in it there is a chasm that lies between the capabilities of the architects and the materials they use and the wishes of the customers. While it is possible to build a house of the most incredible outlines and configurations from ordinary brick today, the vast majority of customers still seek to build for themselves either traditional houses with a gable roof, or estates "a la castles". In total, 35 houses were presented for the competition, and of them 7-8 objects possessed the features of modernism or high-tech, all the rest were variations on the themes of chalets and estates.
