A bridge for pedestrians and cyclists will connect the two banks of a stream (or rather a small river) of Foremile Run, which serves as the border between Alexandria and Arlington County. It is a small ecosystem that plays an important role in preventing flooding of the surrounding areas during melting snow and heavy rains.

In order to preserve and strengthen this landscape, it was decided to turn it into a recreational area. The first step towards this will be the construction of a bridge that will help the residents of Fore-Mile Run cross the stream, as well as attract visitors to the new park.

The challenge for the architects was not to destroy the ecosystem and the stream bed, while creating a bridge with original, sculptural outlines. Grimshaw received first prize for a project developed in collaboration with Arup engineers and landscape architects Scape. Second place went to the workshop team Olin, Buro Happold, Explorations Architecture and L'Observatoire International. The third prize went to the Rosales + Partners group, Schlaich Bergermann and Partner and Simpson Gumpertz and Heger.
