The first thing that catches your eye is the modest and at the same time very noble appearance of the building. This is not the kind of headquarters for oil and gas companies that we have become accustomed to over the past decade. There is really nothing pretentious or ostentatious in its appearance, and only a careful study of the object will tell you that in this case the funds were spent on the quality and innovativeness of architectural solutions.

The dimensions of the Novatek complex, in a sense, were set long before the start of its design. The fact is that the closest vis-a-vis the building is the Udaltsov Plaza business center, located on the opposite side of the street of the same name. This ten-story generously glazed volume with one dashingly rounded corner is a typical example of Moscow commercial architecture, greedy up to square meters and, alas, very tasteless. At the same time, the building plays a rather important urban planning role - it fixes the intersection and serves as a kind of buffer between the roadway and high-rise residential buildings located in the depths of the block. Taking a similar angular position, Novatek, thus, could no longer be significantly taller or wider than its neighbor. The only thing that the architects could control was the appearance and quality of the office complex, and the designers did their best.

Thanks to a finely calculated scaling system and a combination of elements, a building is perceived completely differently from different distances. If you look at the house from afar, then the first thing that you pay attention to is the pairwise combination of windows into tall and narrow vertical blocks (1.35 meters wide and 6 meters high), due to which its entire volume seems to be visually selected, grouped extremely tightly. This is the scale of a large avenue; it is for those who look at the house from the inside of the rushing stream of cars. The echo of the traffic flow was reflected in the undulating protrusions on the main facade, giving the usual sculptural plasticity to the usual parallelepiped. The architects do not hide that the appearance of bay windows in the project is primarily due to the need to increase the area of the building, however, the dictates of the spirit of commerce were smoothed out and “dimmed” with the help of an unusual wave-like shape, contrasting with the overall austere appearance of the house. At the same time, the “wave” itself is not static: the bay windows are displaced relative to each other, due to which from afar the facade resembles a giant panel of fabric, which sways the wind.

Coming closer, you notice that all the windows and stone blocks between them are turned to the plane of the facade at a certain angle. Such dynamism hides the massiveness of the elements from which the building is assembled - six-meter single glasses and thick slabs of Brazilian limestone. And if on a straight plane the "teeth" look like vertical blinds (this association is greatly enhanced by the relief of horizontal stripes decorating stone slabs), then they turn the bay windows surfaces into giant gears. “In our opinion, such a shape should be worn either in curved glass, or somehow specially beaten, because it is inevitably perceived as a faceted glass made from individual glasses,” explains Sergey Kuznetsov, one of the authors of the project, managing partner of the SPEECH bureau.

The corners of the building consist of solid L-shaped elements, and the facade overlooking Udaltsova Street is quite strict: facing a quiet and green residential area, it does not seek to invade it, much less transform it, but rather plays the role the boundaries between the street and the avenue. Its only decoration is squares made from glass "teeth" only.

Such a spectacular stone and glass garment is in fact only the upper, cold, layer of the double façade. Behind it there are double-glazed windows that open inward, which are automatically closed by blinds in sunny weather. This gave the architects the opportunity to use a cold ceiling for air conditioning the complex - a system that is usually ineffective in Russian conditions, but in combination with a double facade, not only works great, but also allows the building to be ranked among energy efficient buildings. By the way, the SPEECH workshop and its customers intend to receive one of the European certificates of compliance with the standards of energy and environmental design.

Energy-efficient technologies and expensive high-quality materials used in the decoration of facades and interiors only complement the image of a rational, non-sophisticated building, in which a great inner dignity is felt.
