One of the main British museums is not just opening a branch in Dundee, but plans to make it a multifunctional center for the promotion of Scottish design. In addition, its building should become a "vanishing point" for the entire embankment of the city, located on the banks of the Tei River estuary, in this place, which becomes the bay of the North Sea.

The building will appear on an artificial island near the land, with which it will be connected by a bridge-dam. All six finalists in one way or another beat this advantageous location of the building. Stephen Hall did it best, with a tall, frosted glass structure (slightly reminiscent of

complex for Copenhagen) seems to be a mirage on the surface of the water, and, thanks to this decision, will change its appearance depending on the weather, season and time of day; at the same time, changing natural light will change the perception of the interior.

A similar effect may well be achieved by the REX bureau with their mirrored facades. At the same time, the structure of their construction depends entirely on the organization of functional spaces inside, which demonstrates the ideology borrowed by the head of REX Joshua Prince-Ramus from his former boss Rem Koolhaas. The inverted pyramid (such a solution allows you to save materials, reduce the occupied area and use the "self-shadowing" of the facades) contains exhibition zones of different purpose (the most important and spacious ones are on the upper tier), united by a "technical" core in the center, where the stairs are located, cafe, etc.

The Snohetta project is based on the image of a ship swaying on the water and responding to the slightest changes in current and wind. At the same time, which is typical for these architects, they not only thought out the solution of the building itself, but also the public space around, including the artificial landscape (which is reminiscent of their opera house in Oslo).

The “Delugan Meissl” workshop presented the new museum in the form of a complex volume, concerning the “island” built for it only at the top of the latter (it resembles a “hill” with its outlines with steps descending to the water).

Kengo Kuma has developed, perhaps, the most "versatile" project: its construction of concrete "bars" is connected to the coast not just by a bridge, but by a wide area. It itself consists of two volumes, fused in the upper part and standing partly on the platform, and partly in the water. An independent public space of complex configuration emerges between them.

The simplest (and probably the cheapest, given the £ 47 million budget announced by the organizers) was proposed by the only Scots on the list of finalists, Sutherland Hussey Architects. This rectangular volume, with its laconic solution, should, according to their plan, remind of local castles, lighthouses, industrial buildings at a shipyard and even primitive houses on stilts.
