Philips has held an LED tour - the second annual interactive session on LED lighting, which traditionally took place on the territory of the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO and brought together more than 300 partner and design organizations, distributors, design and retail companies, city municipalities and other structures working in the field of lighting engineering, as well as students from specialized universities.

During the event, Philips guests and experts discussed the development trends of the domestic lighting industry and the prospects for the use of LEDs in Russia, which every year are becoming more widespread in urban construction and design.

“Modern Russia is more and more actively moving from traditional light sources to LED solutions. In 2011-2015, the growth dynamics of the LED market will reach about 28-48% per year. Today, in Russia, the share of LED lighting is up to 5% of the professional lighting equipment market,”says Peter van Berkel, Vice President and Head of the Lighting Solutions sector in Russia, the CIS and Mongolia. “The main trend in recent years has been an increase in the share of LED solutions in indoor lighting, commercial real estate and public areas of residential buildings.”

As part of the LED tour, Philips and Kommersant Publishing House held a round table “City for Life”. Experts in the field of lighting and energy efficiency discussed the role of light in creating the image of the city, its comfort and safety, as well as innovative developments in this area.

“Light is a component that plays a fundamental role in creating the image of a city and its atmosphere. With the help of light, you can make the city not only attractive for tourists, but also convenient for residents. The lighting needed for a comfortable and healthy life can also be energy efficient, and the budget savings can cover other costs for the city, for example, in the social area,”said Rohir van der Heide, Vice President of Philips Design and Chief Designer of Philips. The participants of the event saw the latest developments in the field of LED solutions for indoor and outdoor lighting. The demonstrated LED solutions differed in the field of application, design, light characteristics, and at the same time they were united by consistently high indicators of energy efficiency. The exposition was divided into five zones - hotel, production, office, city street and shop.

Hospitality products were presented in the hotel lobby, which was illuminated by the highly efficient Luxspace range, the warm glow of the MasterLED spot, and the TurnRound Gridlight range, which allows the lighting to change directions within the luminaire. Solutions for industrial enterprises - LED multi-tiered GentleSpace luminaires and waterproof Pacific LED - were presented in the Industry zone. The third installation demonstrated how to use DayZone, PowerBalance, SmartForm and TaskFlex LED luminaires to make a modern office space comfortable for employees. Lamps CitySpirit, Milewide, SpeedStar, CitySwan recreated the atmosphere of the street. Philips showed its retail lighting solutions as a store where stylish UnicOne Pendant and Maxos LED panel were installed. A stand-alone booth showcased the possibilities of architectural lighting, demonstrating how iColor Cove MX Powercore flood lighting modifies a variety of surfaces and materials.

Among the innovations on the LED tour, one should note the development, which has no analogues in Russia yet. For the first time in our country, an interactive wall entirely made of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED - Organic Light Emission Diods) is presented. This light-emitting installation consists of hundreds of ultra-thin panels. The LED wall reacts to moving objects and the image on it changes, for example, repeating the contours of the bodies of people passing by - the panels go out and light up. The wall design was developed by rAndom International studio for Philips.

We hope that soon many houses will have ceilings glowing in different colors, glass walls that light up when touched, and windows that light up after dark.”

Philips began researching organic LEDs back in 1991 as part of the development of OLED displays. Since 2004, the company has been working on organic LEDs for lighting purposes. The thin and flat structure of OLEDs allows them to be integrated and used in a completely different way than LEDs - or any other light source. Philips is the first company to market a Lumiblade product in April 2009 and introduce an easy-to-integrate OLED module, a standard lighting panel with a quick-connect device. In 2009 in Milan and London, Philips presented various OLED-based concepts with leading designers. In 2010, the company opened a creative OLED laboratory in Aachen, Germany, where experts in electronics, lighting and applied design develop the lighting technology of the future.

In May 2011, Philips announced its intention to invest 40 million euros to increase the production capacity of the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) plant in Aachen, Germany. The investment will boost the company's OLED business and increase the availability of OLED modules for high-tech decorative lighting solutions. Additional capacity at Philips' OLED plant in Aachen, which was originally set up to produce test samples, is expected to be available in 2012.
