The plan for the renovation of a Victorian garden in a major Scottish city was developed by them with the participation of the landscape bureau Olin and the local architectural studio Keppie Design. In the final of the competition, which we have already written about, the proposal "Diller Scofidio + Renfro" turned out to be the best along with the project of Norman Foster. The organizers had to appoint "overtime", as a result of which the superiority of the Americans was revealed.
Their competitive work was presented under the motto "Granite Web". The existing terraced park has been transformed into a series of interconnected spaces, united around the building of a new culture and arts center. The historical balustrades and statues of the park will be preserved, the arches and vaults of its terraces, the bridge connected with them, now little noticeable, will be emphasized.
This is the first major European success of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, although the bureau has existed since 1979. Perhaps the “leap across the ocean”, as the winners called it, is due to the extraordinary popularity of their High Line Park in New York: this project could not do not influence the decision of the jury.
However, the implementation of the plan for the "City Garden of Aberdeen" in life is not yet guaranteed - in favor of the project must speak out in a referendum, the townspeople, and not all of them support the reconstruction: some support the preservation of the historic park.
