Almost nowhere is love for nature as pervasive as in Scandinavia. Perhaps this is due to the fact that its harsh northern character forces people to be sensitive to the environment. Therefore, objects, the purpose of which can most accurately be defined as "communication with nature", most often arise precisely in the Scandinavian countries.

Todd Saunders' new facility has appeared in Stokke, south of the Norwegian capital. A relict oak forest has been preserved here, part of which has been turned into a sculpture park. In this park, an observation platform was installed, this "staircase to heaven" with a transparent glass fence, which very tactfully protects the visitor from falling and does not interfere with his "dissolution" in the surrounding landscape.

The architect explains the essence of the Forest Ladder object by the fact that the horizontal terrain needs a certain vertical, but it seems that the meaning here is more ancient and, perhaps, even mythological. The desire to look over the trees means trying to talk to nature on an equal footing: indeed, to look into the eyes of a Norwegian troll, you need to climb higher.

Interestingly, the object was the result of a long work, during which 19 out of 20 original designs were rejected. The fact is that, in addition to the clear function of viewing the area, the structure is perceived by the author as an artistic installation, and in this hypostasis it is an allusion to the ruin of the structure, of which only a staircase remains.

The outer side of the building is covered with red corten steel, contrasting with the surrounding forest. The inner surface, on the other hand, is lined with whitewashed boards. The “forest ladder” was delivered and installed in place by helicopter so that not a single tree was damaged.
