His candidacy was approved by the council of the Biennale di Venezia, and presented for consideration by the curator of this year's architectural exhibition, David Chipperfield.
He stressed that it is difficult to find a second among modern architects with the same “constant presence” in the profession as Siza. With amazing consistency, he creates works of the highest level of quality, while avoiding self-promotion and emphasizing his skill - which to one degree or another is characteristic of all prominent architects of our time.
Chipperfield also mentioned the most important intellectual component of Siza's work, his confidence in decisions based on long reflection, the seriousness of his projects: "Having developed his own architectural language, he seems to speak [in it] with all of us."
The awards ceremony will take place on 29 August, the opening day of the Biennale to the general public.
