A giant "butterfly" about 50 meters high seemed to have landed on the artificial peninsula of Lake Taihu. Actually, there are probably even two butterflies, because the building is crowned with 8 far protruding "wings" made of perforated titanium-zinc RHEINZINK®. Thousands of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are built into the bottom of them, which makes it easy to change the color of their surfaces.

The “forest” of 50 luminous 9-meter columns completes the image. They not only support the roof of the central vestibule, but also protrude outward - onto a stone platform, filling the square and the shore almost to the water.

The theme of the interpenetration of nature and architecture, traditional for Scandinavians, is most fully revealed in the interior. The curved wall of the foyer is made of 20,000 custom glass bricks. So, a spectacular view of the lake opens up to the visitors.

The building itself is quite large: 77,252 m2 area (for comparison, the Moscow Bolshoi Theater reached such indicators only after a large-scale reconstruction, which doubled its original size). Its main premises is an auditorium with 1,680 seats for staging Chinese and classical operas and ballets. There is also a universal concert hall for 690 spectators.

The main hall is finished with 15,000 custom-made bamboo panels. With this solution, the architects simultaneously achieved excellent acoustics, introduced traditional Chinese material into the project and created a warm, humane and at the same time solemn atmosphere.

Theater in Wuxi harmoniously combines tradition and modernity, but above all, it is notable for the unique symbiosis of two very different cultures. The architects found and clearly demonstrated completely unexpected intersection points: openness and transparency of space, love for wood, the ability to admire nature and technological excellence.
