The customers, the university administration, first announced a competition for the reconstruction of one of the existing buildings, but Vignoli was able to convince them of the need to build a new building of a large size. The resulting 10-story structure not only occupies the entire lot, but also overlaps Maryland Avenue with a cantilever extension.
On an area of 111.5 thousand m2, there is enough space for the treatment of patients and scientific studies, that is, the cooperation of doctors, researchers, clinicians and other employees. But those who seek medical help still remain in the spotlight - 240 single rooms are provided for them, each of which has space for the patient's family members. There are also waiting areas for loved ones of the patient on each tier and in the central foyer on the 7th floor. Called the Sky Lobby, it includes the main reception, chapel, business center, dining room, convention center, and more. The lobby's large size and views of the city and Lake Michigan set it apart from typical hospital corridors and recreations. Outside, the tier of the foyer visually divides the building horizontally, since it is smaller in area of the upper and lower floors.
The building is designed for possible future changes in medical technology, treatment practices and hospital needs, which will entail changes in the program. A ceiling height of 5.5 m and a square planning module with a side of 9.6 m will allow you to change the purpose of any part of the building.
At street level, the building houses shops, cafes and other infrastructure needed by the townspeople.
