At the Wilhelma Zoo, gorillas and bonobos have received housing 14 times larger than before: the total area of the complex exceeds 1 hectare. The living conditions were improved for the animals at the expense of chimpanzees: the last two monkeys of this species in Stuttgart, elderly Suzy and Moritz, were sent “retired” to the new Hungarian zoo in 2010, where they will live surrounded by fellows.

The new aviary of the architects Hascher Jehle is an elongated S-shaped volume, reminiscent of a hill: the resemblance to the natural relief is enhanced by the green roof, which smoothly merges into the green of the Wilhelma area and the adjacent Rosenstein Park. Bonobos and gorilla enclosures sit opposite each other and open into a visitor corridor in the center of the building. Open enclosures adjoin buildings closed on opposite sides.

If the solution of the premises is determined, first of all, by the convenience of the visitors watching the monkeys, then the open-air spaces are intended for rest and communication between animals. For the gorillas, shady trees have been planted, imitating the forest they are accustomed to, and for the bonobos, inclined supports supporting the fence netting, and artificial vines and "nests" for sleeping have been hung.

The project budget was 22 million euros.
