"Light of the future", this is the theme of the competition, - this is and understanding the prospects for the development of technologies related to energy consumption, and various interpretations of already known schemes for the use of natural lighting. In most projects, the contestants turn to the sun as the main and inexhaustible source, the light and thermal energy of which can be used to solve problems related to a healthy microclimate in new and reconstructed buildings, to stimulate interaction between space and humans, to search for emotional and metaphorical connections between people. and natural substances. By exploring light, contestants inevitably enter an interdisciplinary field, encompassing materials science, marketing, medical, history and other fields of study.

The works of the participants are evaluated by a competent jury, which includes heads of reputable architectural bureaus, professors of specialized universities, representatives of VELUX, engaged in research on natural lighting, energy consumption and indoor microclimate. The competition is expanding its geography every year, the lists of participants are becoming wider. The last time in 2012, out of 3,262 applications from 79 countries of the world, 983 were admitted to the competition, of which 4 won prizes and 10 were highly praised by the jury. Empathy, an attentive attitude to the living environment, a reminder of the consequences of natural disasters characterize the work of the winners of the competition: a team of students and their teacher from the Federal Polytechnic University of Zurich. With the help of 700 luminous column tubes made of polymethyl methacrylate, they propose to recreate (both on the surface and underground) a small village in the Alps buried under a mudflow. Fluorescent glass, accumulating sunlight, turns from transparent to matte and visible to the eye, creating volumetric forms of different types of buildings. On the surface, the authors propose to place pieces of furniture between the pipes protruding from the ground, thereby revealing the true defenselessness and fragility of the living space created by man. Sunlight flooded the alpine glacier, water with sand and stones destroyed the village, light, now in a new edifying quality, symbolically "revived" human habitation. The power of light is destructive and creative at the same time.

The Wandering Spheres project by the team of Inji Korea University is notable for the fact that it addresses the issues of improving the quality of life of poor peoples in the deserts. And not by imposing a settled way of life, but by preserving the traditional way of their existence with the introduction of small but positive innovations. Competitors offer nomads to carry light plastic balls with solar energy collectors inside on fiber-optic cords. Heating up during the day, the helium pumped inside expands the volume of the sphere, which accumulates both heat and light inside, which can be used in the dark and cool times of the day. In addition, the balls can be grouped, forming zones with different functions, the enclosing screens of which are fiber-optic cords. Thus, the nomadic desert or steppe tribes have a kind of temporary dwellings, light, mobile, illuminated, producing heat and not requiring complex installation.

The adjustable silicone ball curtain, invented by a student at China University Tongji, allows you to create light or dark spots on the glass surface. Three kinds of balls, each of which is responsible for low, medium or high illumination, operate under air pressure, distributed between adjacent balls using valves and a constant pressure system operating inside the window "pie". The entire curtain is powered by photovoltaic panels. And although in the project changes in the curtain take place according to the movements of human hands, the author sees the nearest perspective of his development in remote control from the remote control. The task of the project is to create in one room zones of different degrees of illumination, individual for each inhabitant of the space. Place of use - premises with a large glazing area.

Perhaps the most artistic of all the finalist projects is the work of the students of the Krakow Polytechnic Institute. The team's goal was to understand whether light alters the perception of shape or whether shape causes light to spread through space. The resulting project, in the end, did not reveal contradictions in the cornerstone principle of architecture: both form and light are important to create space. The decisive and conciliatory role in the work was played by shadows and highlights passing through the special structure of the wall, which consists of a number of modules that transform the light fluxes. The authors used the skills gained from studying the operation of the SLR camera and created a model of the building envelope with a system of double-sided modules. The outer layer of the modules (from the side of the illuminated corridor or street) lets in light, the inner layer (from the side of the room) with a triangular cross-section distributes light fluxes like a camera diaphragm. The effect is also enhanced by the movements of people passing from the outside of the structure, which is why additional "dancing" shadows are formed. So, from the symbiosis of light and form, a fascinating "game" arises, in which a person can easily be involved. As required by modern "interactive" architecture.
