If you immediately ask "Where is Strasbourg?" The interlocutor often thinks before answering, and sometimes even blurts out: "In Germany." Indeed: it is a unique French city in Alsace with a German name. Just as Germany and France meet here, Strasbourg's rich heritage of the Middle Ages and modern architecture perfectly coexist.

As a result, the city has become a cultural, diplomatic and business center: tourists rush to visit the famous Gothic cathedral first of all, and delegations from all over the world come to the Palace of Music and Congress in the outskirts of Wacken. But if the cathedral in the city center attracts with its history, then functionality is much more important for a place of business meetings, which was taken into account by the Austrian architects Dietrich | Untertrifaller who won the June 2011 competition for the renovation of the Palace. Work on the implementation of their project began at the end of 2012 and should be completed by 2016.

It was decided to add a third one to the 1975 building, consisting of two volumes - a conference hall for 600 seats. The existing halls have also been enlarged and one of them will be used exclusively for concerts. A new rehearsal hall for the orchestra and a huge (3000m2) multifunctional room with good acoustics are also associated with cultural events. The central foyer will become the connecting link for the three buildings of the Palace.

As for the architectural solution, Helmut Dietrich and Mikhail Untertrifaller preferred to use the shape of an equilateral triangle with cut corners used here from the very beginning. The entire complex will be united by an extended colonnade along the facades, which supports the common roof.

Further more. Now Dietmar Feichtinger has won the competition for the design of a completely new exhibition center (the so-called PEX - Parc de la Expositions) in Strasbourg, very close to the Palais des Music and Congresses. Feichtinger strove to approach in his work the project of Dietrich and Untertrifaller. In terms of the materials used, the buildings will indeed be similar: in both cases, wood and glass are widely used. By the way, numerous glazed surfaces (more than 75%) in the PEX project were highly appreciated by the jury of the competition also because they provide natural lighting in the exhibition halls.

If in the Palace of Music and Congresses all the premises are grouped around the foyer, then in PEX the dominant feature will be a wide open staircase: it will attract not only the PEX buildings, but also the Palace. The main building of the complex is multi-tiered, with a cantilever extension; upstairs there will be a restaurant with an open terrace.

All other exhibition pavilions according to the project have complex plans and roofs with a zigzag profile. They will be connected by many glazed passages, and the largest of them will lead to the Palace of Music and Congresses.

Of course, Feichtinger had much more opportunities for a flight of imagination than the architects involved in rebuilding the old Palace, but therefore the desire to create an ensemble with a neighboring building, and not show "originality", is especially valuable in his work.
