The tower, so far known only as "number two", will appear in the "European Quarter" complex, which has been erected since 1999 on the site of a former freight station. The location is more than successful: the famous Messe Frankfurt exhibition complex, the central station, the banking center are very close. The quarter itself combines housing, offices, shops and cafes, hotel rooms, a congress center, green public areas.
The site of "tower number 2" has recently been the subject of a competition for the project of the Grand Hyatt hotel,
won by UNStudio. However, the hotel chain later abandoned its plans, and the site passed to the Berlin developer gsp Gesellschaft für Städtebau und Projektentwicklung.
The new competition will design the tallest residential tower in Germany - a 160-meter building, which will also be the first fully residential skyscraper in Frankfurt. Together with the recently opened shopping center Skyline Plaza, the tower will form the entrance to the European Quarter.
The local bureau Magnus Kaminiarz & Cie became the winner of the competition: the facades of their buildings are covered with “cameras” of balconies of smooth outlines, which gave the investor the “symbolism” necessary for the investor, along with calmness and clarity, which the jury liked. German Internet users reacted optimistically to the result of the competition: in their opinion, this is an extremely daring project for the conservative Frankfurt, which could lay the foundation for further architectural experiments.
The second place was taken by the nps tchoban voss bureau, the third - by Astoc together with Lorber und Paul Architekten; both winners presented very restrained and "traditional" options. The companies Schneider + Schumacher, nkbak and raumwerk Gesellschaft für Architektur und Stadtplanung also took part in the closed competition.
The new tower will have 340 apartments on an area of 44,000 m2, of which 30% are relatively small, 55% are 3- and 4-room apartments, and 15% of housing will be spacious dwellings on the upper floors with an area of up to 280 m2.
