The first wing of the Arsenal, which usually housed the main curatorial exposition, is devoted to the large-scale interdisciplinary research exhibition Monditalia. “We decided to view Italy as a 'fundamental' country, completely unique, but at the same time indicative in a global sense, especially in our time when many countries are balancing between chaos and realizing their potential,” says project curator Rem Koolhaas. The project involves 41 studies of various Italian themes, performed in the popular genre of case studies, 82 Italian films, many performances, an impressive schedule of which is displayed at the entrance.

The design of the exposition, however, shown to the public for a long time, in fact turns out to be a slender, open and varied system, although it is not devoid of the artistic slovenliness of the tent circus. The effect falls on the person entering the first hall, where we are greeted by bright illumination on the frame of the 16th century palazzo - this happens at city holidays. Either this is a holiday in Italy, or the door to the fair (in this case, the "mimes" - the actors of the performances - are quite understandable); or, perhaps, as we enter, we penetrate behind the stage decorations, behind the curtains of the fairground booth.

A giant curtain with an old map of the Italic world printed on it divides the series of halls longitudinally so that, at first, fragments of films appear on the right side, and installations of research projects on the left. However, soon the curtain opens, it is lifted up, and somewhere it is simply removed. Open metal structures of podiums, plywood steps, an uneven permeable curtain - all this resembles a backstage space, and if it is a stage, then it is very temporary - an effect, apparently, created specifically to combine very different things.

However, at first we are introduced to a very slender structure (and only then it is destroyed by the chaos of various inclusions; so Italy was built at first in a strict Roman order). The "grid" is created by stands of research projects; each is represented by an installation measuring about a meter by two (in which a non-rigid module is guessed), a short description, and, as a rule, an array of data, which you can delve into, or you can pass by. In addition, at the opening day, almost every project was guarded by authors who tried to explain the essence of the research.

Installations act on the sensory sphere - for example, the first project at the very entrance is represented by a box, where viewers are encouraged to enter one at a time (but not for epileptics). In complete darkness, at first something buzzes, then it rattles, after which a bright light flashes - and all this is devoted to the problems of migration on the example of the Italian island of Lampedusa; what the detailed booklet lying next door tells about.

To prevent the visitor from getting confused, all projects are "tied" with dotted lines to their descriptions on the walls; in addition, each study is marked with coordinates and an impressive cross, which binds it to the world map and at the same time fixes a place for the topic in the space of the hall.

The project "Architecture of Hedonism: Three Villas on the Island of Capri", is represented by an Etruscan head with glass eyes (a ritual characteristic of Capri, there are many such heads in the local museum) - the antique original (?) hint at the delights of Roman villa life.

The pornopia of modern Pompeii. Some of the projects interpret antiquity as a measure and a beginning, while the other part is carried away by its sensuality. Grandfather Freud sternly warns: the Pompeian ruins are an abyss of the unconscious. He was obsessed with Pompeii and compared psychoanalysis to archeology - the authors echo … Paris and Vegas, capitalism and repression, all sins from Pompeii.

Legible Pompeii.

This installation is more archaeological and is dedicated to the problems of the preservation of Pompeii. Not without a diagram illustrating multilayer conservation processes; the decoration is a pyramid made of LEGO-like plastic bricks with fragments of ersatz-"Pompeian" material melted inside.

All roads lead to Rome. But where exactly?

A complex half-joking scheme, similar to a map in a detective's office, behind it is a box with a European passport and euro cents "for Marcus Aurelius."

Superstudio. The secret of the continuity of the monument.

Superstudio is an avant-garde group founded in Florence in 1966, strongly criticizing the ideals of modernism, working with ideal metaphysical forms. "As Lot's wife said, architecture exists in time, like salt in water." However, La Moglie di Lot was the name of the installation in the form of a salt pyramid, which the group exhibited at the 1978 Biennale of Art; from there and the maxim. Now the salt pyramid (presumably, she is the wife) is gradually melting under drops of water from a plastic tube, which is planned to be moved further, gradually dissolving the following salt sculptures of metaphysical architectural forms: after the pyramid, a clear colosseum is intended to dissolve in the water of time.

Rome - Hospital San Giacomo, Ghost Quarter Giambattista Noli.

The hospital, "a fine example of public architecture," was closed in 2008 for privatization. The hospital building depicts a compact house suspended in the middle of the hall; inside - a comparative study of not one, but all Roman hospitals.

The project from Rem Koolhaas on Monditalia is the most concise, no data sets and diagrams (!) - photographs of Laurenzian's library from Charlie Koolhaas and a few phrases from himself. Koolhaas calls the library space "terrifying like a nightmare." "… For a modern artist and architect, the main lesson of the Laurentian library is probably the following: Mannerism is a dish that should be eaten cold and in small doses," the great man concludes. So that. Rem Koolhaas vs Michelangelo. Photographs of fragments of the library's interior are cropped fragmentarily and of different formats, their tapestry hanging is supposed to enhance the effect of the manneristic horror described by Koolhaas.

The stories of Tortona. Exploration of the Italian hinterland in a section from mountains to plains: what is its culture, what it consists of and where it comes from. The main population of the region is economically motivated entrepreneurs, and the culture is responsive to what they produce. Photos of working people (which, as you know, you can look at all the time), bottles (with production products?), Bourgeois grandmother's dressers and a mirror …

As we move deeper into the exhibition, there are more performances, and they also take up more space. The hall in which the children dance is completely given over to them and is surrounded by a balcony, from where the dancing can be watched from above. However, they do not always dance, but more often freeze - as it should be in a performance.

Radical pedagogy: action - reaction - interaction.

Explores a series of pedagogical experiments that played a key role in the formation of architectural theory and practice in the second half of the 20th century. Each pedagogical theory is marked with a code, briefly described, illustrated with photographs of buildings and books. In the center of the hall there are classes with children.

Ephemeral: the conditions of Italian postmodernism. The people, charmingly suspended in the air on metal wires, symbolize the fascination with the ephemeral structures and utopian spaces of theater, performance - catalysts of collective imagination that became popular after the "lead years" in the late 1970s. Under the installation there are boxes with newspapers illustrating the theme.

Sales oddity. The rag installation, which would fit the role of theatrical scenery of the 1970s, is designed to tell about the high-profile development project of the former Italian President Berlusconi - Milano 2, or rather even about his high-profile PR: sex stars talked on TV about the benefits of a luxurious life, far from dirty urban air, alien social strata, crime and even low-quality products. Sounds familiar. And the installation, apparently, is about the ephemerality of bright PR, about how quickly catchy slogans and bright pictures of a beautiful life age and deteriorate.

Vagelo Secondo Matteo. Performance "crucifixion". One of the brightest impressions of the first day of the opening day, which, apparently, will be replaced later by others. A lot of enthusiastic people under the guidance of set designers and to the accompaniment of a synthesized organ in a slow dance - all together very convincing.

*** The exhibition can be viewed for hours, although its atmosphere is dense, rich, student-like, somewhat tiresome and one wants to get everything in the form of a book (this is not an advertisement for a catalog, although it is, as always, large). The study is clearly unfinished, it looks more like a pre-defense or even a stand in the office of a scientist (or detective), with passages, clippings, notes connected by arrows and strings. However, there was a lot of room, in varying quantities: the performances hint at the Teatro del Arte, at street mimes; carrying the cross - for church processions. Church art, the mafia, a glacier melting on the border in Austria, a confessional with a video speech of a politician and memories of fascism - you can't cover everything at once, but it's worth taking a closer look.
