Research and Production Enterprise "Photogrammetry" has 16 years of experience in the production of architectural measurements. In addition, all these years we have been developing and improving measurement technology and software. Within the framework of this article, we propose to get acquainted with the possibility of processing three-dimensional laser scanning data using the Internet service "NPP" Photogrammetry ".

Having appeared in the market of laser scanning systems in 2006, phase scanners operating at a speed of more than 500 thousand points per second and providing millimeter accuracy have made 3D laser scanning technology attractive for the production of architectural measurements. However, two serious problems immediately arose:

  • The software available on the market at that time was not suited to work with such huge amounts of data (billions of measurements);
  • since before that in architecture, laser scanners were not massively used - there were no specialized programs focused on the production of architectural measurements.

Based on these considerations and taking into account the prospects of laser scanning, in 2007 the research and production enterprise "Photogrammetry" decided to create its own software capable of processing huge amounts of data and focused on solving architectural and restoration problems. And since before that for a number of years the enterprise was engaged in architectural photogrammetry and had serious technological developments in this area, we tried to combine the advantages of both technologies - laser scanning and photogrammetry - within the framework of one software product.

Today, in St. Petersburg, the ScanIMAGER software complex occupies a leading position in the market of specialized software and is the standard tool for processing 3D laser scanning data among specialists in the architectural and restoration industry. Over the past seven years ScanIMAGER has gone through several key stages in its development and today it can be provided to the end user as a service via the Internet. As an information resource, the site www.scanimager.ru was created, where you can learn about the capabilities of the software package, read the latest news and download the latest versions of the software.

ScanIMAGER is modular and comes in various modifications. Within the framework of this article, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the ScanIMAGER Standard Plus level, which is provided through the Internet service.

The ideology of the ScanIMAGER Standard Plus software complex is that the data obtained from various laser 3D scanners by the conversion method are transferred to the ScanIMAGER complex, where they undergo further processing. Primary processing includes registration of scans in a single coordinate system for special targets (marks) both in fully automatic and manual modes. For the convenience of specifying marks, as well as to control their automatic recognition, scans are built on a plane (Fig. 1).

Specially developed laser scanning data storage format allows displaying practically unlimited data volumes (tens of billions of measurements). In fig. 2 shows a point three-dimensional model of the Ascension Cathedral Military Cathedral (Novocherkassk), containing 24 billion points.

The toolkit of the program allows you to take the necessary dimensions from the model, obtain sections and cuts in any places of the object, as well as calculate surface areas, volumes and solve other problems (Fig. 3, 4).

The ScanIMAGER Standard Plus software package includes the Ortho block, which contains powerful tools for creating and processing orthophotomaps, obtaining sweeps of curved surfaces onto a plane. The filters available in the toolkit allow you to identify and visualize the contours of an object, spaced planes, angles of incidence of planes, irregularities, bulges, etc. (Fig. 5-7).

An object with a curvilinear shape can be deployed onto a plane while maintaining the length and area along the zone where a cylinder or a more complex surface fits into the object (Fig. 8, 9).

All materials obtained as a result of laser scanning data processing (sections, sections, orthophotomaps, flat sweeps) are referenced to a geodetic coordinate system and heights. Therefore, as a result of exporting to exchange formats or pasting into AutoCAD, all elements of the object are correctly positioned in the coordinate field of the system.

The presented capabilities of the ScanIMAGER Standard Plus software complex can be tested independently in full during the demo period by going to the website www.scanimager.ru. After the demo period expires, the service will be provided on a commercial basis.
