The project of the Center for Contemporary Russian Art "Udarnik" was developed by Eric van Egeraat as part of a closed international competition for the best concept for the reconstruction of the legendary cinema. Although the Dutch architect's proposal was not among the top three finalists, his concept is perhaps the most innovative of all projects.

The building of the cinema "Udarnik" is a concrete frame typical of constructivism with rather large glazed window openings, at the same time its almost symmetrical floors and impressive chandeliers in the spirit of socialist realism are more characteristic of early socialist realism. During the transformation of the building, Erik van Egeraat took into account and emphasized the polemics of the eras unfolding in it. In addition, it was assumed that the transformation of the cinema into a modern art center would take place in strict accordance with the Venice Charter for the conservation and restoration of monuments and places of interest. Thus, all historical parts of the building will be preserved, protected and restored, while new elements will be solved in a modern style.

The motto of this project is “art in motion”, and this very accurately reflects the essence of the proposed reconstruction.

On the one hand, movement is the exceptional versatility of the use of the cinema building incorporated into the project. “Today's successful museums need flexibility and multithreading that go far beyond their usual programs and opening hours,” both Eric van Egeraat and the competition sponsor are convinced. Keeping the sector-like plan of the "Udarnik", the architect not only fills it with new functions, but changes its character, relying on flexible spaces that flow into each other. Simple, low-tech floor plan interventions allow (parts of) buildings to be used either as exhibition spaces or as workshops, classrooms, theaters, dance performances, poetry readings, conferences or parties. In addition, the architect expanded the functions outlined in the design assignment by adding spacious spaces in the Grand Café and Restaurant.

The second and no less important embodiment of the movement is the revival of the transformable roof, originally laid by Boris Iofan in the 1931 project. It is believed that it was opened only once, but hypothetically, the cinema always had such an opportunity, and Erik van Egeraat decided to bring it to life, but not in the place where it is now, but where it was in the original project. True, in the 21st century, the very meaning of such a transformation changes, the opening roof ceases to be an exclusively entertaining and visual object and begins to bear a functional load: opening today, the roof not only allows visitors to see the Moscow sky, but also serves as a kind of "gate" for especially large and expressive art objects and installations, which are moved inside and outside the building by a special lifting mobile. Of course, the building is also equipped with more traditional handling equipment that is used throughout the year.

Externally, the lifting mechanism resembles a construction crane. Its appearance and function perfectly match the aesthetics and spirit of the constructivist structure. According to the architect's idea, such a structure could not only turn the process of delivering "art-cargo" into an interesting performance, but would also become a recognizable touch in the panorama of Moscow.“At the heart of my project is the desire to reveal, release the creative forces present in the building and take the art center beyond its physical boundaries,” says the architect himself.

As mentioned earlier, Erik van Egeraat brings new elements to the building of the Udarnik cinema, but they are in line with the constructivist and socialist realist approach to design. Engineering companies LLC RUPERTY PROJECT and AEG Engineering, as well as one of the leading architects and restorers Alexander Epifanov, also worked on the project, thanks to which the ambitious design can be implemented within the framework of the Russian experience and Russian requirements for the protection of monuments. All the proposed changes in the building are reversible and will in no way interfere with the complete restoration of the Udarnik cinema, if the need arises in the future.

Erik van Egeraat's energetic project transforms Udarnik into a multifunctional art center, a new point of public attraction on the map of Moscow that is not constrained by the limitations inherent in traditional museums, and explores the emotional and physical impact of art, including outside the building of Udarnik.
