Urban Transformation: Symbiotic City

Illustration: openbuildings.com
Illustration: openbuildings.com

Illustration: openbuildings.com It's no secret that the environmental situation in large cities leaves much to be desired. You can try to fix the situation with the help of urban planning, architectural, landscape, engineering and design projects. Participants of the competition can propose any projects and research based on the regenerative symbiosis of the city and natural ecosystems, that is, on such a system of "relations" between the city and nature, when interaction is exclusively beneficial to both parties. It is also important to demonstrate that the job is socially, economically, politically and technically viable.

Photo: www.cult-turist.ru Today, in some quarters of the Eixample district in Barcelona, developed according to the plan of engineer Ildefons Cerda, priority is given to cars: pedestrians are left with only a narrow strip of sidewalk. Contestants will have to work in the area bounded by Entença Street and Muntaner Street in the “vertical” direction and Paris Street and Mallorca Street in the “horizontal” direction.

At the initiative of the Barcelona City Hall, the bus network has been redesigned, giving residents hope that neighborhoods may look even better than Cerda originally intended: more pleasant, green, pedestrian-friendly.

The organizers of the competition have developed seven program points that the participants of the competition should take into account when developing their project:

  • Ensuring social inclusion
  • Increased civic responsibility
  • Revitalization of public areas
  • Innovative solutions
  • Cycling network development
  • Saving resources (electricity, water)
