The outdoor pool in Rihan was one of the first projects of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron in 1979, but none of the options they developed was realized. Over the past years, the pool and according to the project of other authors did not appear there, although the residents did not have enough of it, and in 2007 the city authorities asked Herzog & de Meuron to return to this plot.
Over the years, living standards have changed, and therefore, instead of an ordinary pool with a developed engine room and chlorinated water, the architects decided to create something like the traditional "badi" baths on the Rhine. It is necessary to purify the water in any pool, but in Riena, a natural filtration system is responsible for this, consisting of cascades planted with aquatic plants, layers of gravel, sand and soil. It is located across the street from the pool and is part of the green recreational area.

The Naturbad swimming pool, which can receive up to 2,000 visitors per day, is adjacent to the bank of the Vise River, a tributary of the Rhine. From its side it is fenced with a "green hedge" made of reeds so that vacationers can see the river, and from the other three - wooden buildings with the necessary infrastructure - changing rooms and cafes.
