This summer, the MARCH School of Architecture graduated its first graduate students. Recall that the head of the school is Evgeny Ass, you can enter there with a bachelor's degree in architecture, and graduates of the school receive a British master's degree MA in Architecture and Urbanism, while studying in Moscow. Architectural design studios at MARSH are run by renowned Russian architects. MARCH is currently completing recruitment for the 2014-15 academic year; interviews will be held on September 16 and 17.

At 19:00 on September 18, the school will host the presentation of MARCH Studio Night, where you can learn more about the studios, about the plans of the school, get to know the teachers, and see student works from previous years. For now, we are publishing excerpts from the studio programs. ***

Heidegger, in his famous article Bauen, Wohnen, Denken, argues that the words to build, live and think in the ancient Germanic language have a common origin and are in fact synonymous. Continuing this thought, we can say that the result of construction - Gebäude, building, building - is a kind of concentrate, a clot of life and thought.

In Russian, the origin of the word building more prosaic and originates at the root zid, i.e clay, but on the other hand, the derivatives from this root spread into the bottomless spaces of meanings - from creation to the world-building. In this perspective, it should not be forgotten that the first man in Judeo-Christian mythology was co-created of clays.

Reflections on what is building and will be dedicated to work in our studio. We named her BUILDING: revision, intending to re-look at the building as a historical cultural phenomenon, to analyze various aspects of its transformation, current existence and potential modifications. We will be interested in the most stable types of buildings that retain the same dimensions and structures for many centuries. We will pay special attention to the anatomy and physiology of buildings, that is, the analysis of the material structure of the architectural body and the functioning of various systems within it. It seems important and interesting to us to analyze the relationship of tectonics with the typology of buildings, to trace the relationship between the shape of buildings, their function and the urban context, to find out how the perception and experience of buildings is related to its size and scale characteristics. And we will formulate many more topics and questions together as the research unfolds.

Based on your research work, you will build your own concepts that will form the basis of your “absolute” building designs. ***

"SACRED - WORLD. SOLOVKI"

In the upcoming thesis, we propose to reflect on the categories of the sacred and the mundane and their reflection in architecture. About how these two seemingly opposing phenomena can not only coexist, but also simultaneously fill the same space. The Solovetsky Archipelago is a unique place in which the sacred and the mundane are concentrated in a very small area and have been woven together for several centuries. We will study this phenomenon and predict its future in the conditions of modern sociocultural trends. ***

Ilya Mukosey called his study studio "Leningradka Embankment" Students under the leadership of Ilya Mukosey explore "inconvenient places" in Moscow and other cities, ways of using them, and, based on the analysis, formulate proposals on how to return the unused space under the flyover at the intersection of Leningradsky Prospect with the TTK, as well as improve the adjacent boulevard. The studio's work is a “live project” of MARSH and CJSC “UK Dynamo” within the framework of the competition for the development of the concept of “Dynamo” boulevard.

The expressway through the urban environment resembles a fast and full-flowing river that suddenly changes its course. Not only because the road breaks the established ties between neighboring territories, but also because the banks are destroyed. The "floodplain" of the technogenic flow, which includes ramps, junctions, overpasses, and backup links, sometimes captures spaces that are several times larger than the road in width. The wider and "faster" the freeway, the stronger the roadside erosion.

Plots of land, cut off from their base by tributaries of motorways, become uncomfortable to walk and unsuitable for pedestrian transit uninhabited islands.

Is it possible to return them to the city? Can you create a human-friendly roadside environment? Could an asphalt river have a comfortable embankment?

At the Naberezhnaya Leningradki studio, students and teachers will consider this problem using the example of the space between Leningradsky Prospekt and Dynamo Park. ***

"ARCHITECTURE as a METAPHOR"

Boris Shabunin

Metaphor (from ancient Greek Μεταφορά - "transfer", "figurative meaning") is a word or expression used in a figurative meaning, which is based on an unnamed comparison of an object with any other on the basis of their common feature.

The language of architecture is volume, space, form, material.

The architecture is metaphorical.

The metaphor reflects the personality of the architect.

The metaphor elevates the architect.

Just as self-identification occurs in the environment of people, metaphorical signs of a structure appear in context.

Project:

Months pass one after another and never meet, but people say that in the mountainous country of Bohemia there was a girl who saw all twelve months at once.

Samuil Marshak, tale "12 months"

Twelve months - different types, technologies, purposes, figurative associations, shapes, colors, etc.

Each month has a huge number of generic characteristics, of which one or two will serve as the basis of the metaphor.

Months form space and communicate with each other.

Months borrow the attributes and pass them on.

The weather can be unpredictable.

Twelve months - twelve authors - twelve metaphors. ***
