We have already talked about the ten best projects of the Moscow Architectural Institute, applying for the Gold Medal. The ten finalists were selected following a two-stage competition in which the best performing students participated. At the first stage of the competition, students worked on the concepts of the stand-pavilion of the Moscow Architectural Institute, these works can be viewed below. As part of the second round, the jury considered the graduation projects of the contestants, and chose one winner - the owner of the Gold Medal 2014, and four finalists.
We publish projects of the winner and finalists of the competition.
Gold Medal MARCHI 2014
Nikolay Zaitsev. Department "Architecture of residential buildings"
Diploma project "Multifunctional complex in the port of Dikson"
Moderators: I. M. Yastrebova, Yu. P. Safronov, V. A. Vorobiev, O. Yu. Suslova
Nikolai Zaitsev in his project tried to answer the urgent task of restoring and reorganizing the ports of the Northern Sea Route, such as Naryan-Mar, Tiksi, Pevek. The territory of the port of Dikson was chosen as the site for the design.
The author proposed to create a modern transport hub, as well as to restore the port and airport that once existed in this place. Among the buildings of the Arctic port, a majestic architectural volume has grown in the project, capable of absorbing all the functions of a large port city. The image of the city-bridge is taken as a basis: a giant bridge connects Dixon Island with the continent, uniting the western and eastern parts of Russia.
Much attention in the project is paid to the issue of energy supply of the city and even the region: alternative energy sources, water reuse. Two small reservoirs should serve as reserve sources of water supply.
Second place. 1st degree diploma
Olga Dzudtseva. Department "Architecture of residential buildings"
Moderators: A. R. Vorontsov, T. B. Nabokova, M. E. Troyan, O. Yu. Suslova
The design site is located in the Basmanny district of Moscow, on the territory of the Art Quarter, and according to the project for its development, a new cultural center should appear here.
The project proposes to open this site for free access to citizens, permeating it with numerous pedestrian routes, which are currently forced to line up along inconvenient bypass routes.
Responding to its surroundings, the complex adopts not only the scale of the historical development, the planning solution with the perimeter construction of buildings that follow clearly along the streets and lanes that delimit the site is also a tribute to the context. At the same time, the architecture of the building is extremely modern - with large glazing openings, cantilever protrusions, façade rhythm beaten down and minimalistic decoration.
The large courtyard formed by the buildings serves as a public urban space with areas for dancing and skateboarding, swimming pools and recreation areas by the water. The colorful windows of Fab Lab's shops and creative workshops face the inner plaza.
Third place, 2nd degree diploma
Daniil Kipikyan. Department "Architecture of residential buildings"
Diploma project “Residential quarter on Serebryanicheskaya embankment. Moscow"
Moderators: A. R. Vorontsov, T. B. Nabokova, M. E. Troyan, O. Yu. Suslova
The project, like the previous one, was carried out within the framework of the Art Quarter concept, which implies the transformation of a vast territory along the Yauza into an urban space of a new quality with a lively street life and a comfortable environment.
The site is surrounded by rather controversial buildings: on the one hand, there are pre-revolutionary buildings of old Moscow, on the other, large-scale houses along the embankment. The volumetric solution of the projected building is designed to form a smooth transition from one scale to another.
As a result, a quarter appears along the river, the volumetric-spatial solution and complex silhouette of which is justified, first of all, by the need to preserve the views of the nearby bell tower and church. The discreet facades, finished with clinker bricks combined with veneered composite panels, are accentuated by vertical "hanging gardens" set on expressive wall terraces.
The layout of the complex offers three different residential typologies: traditional apartments, apartments with built-in gardens and
cohousing. The latter typology is devoted to four floors, which open into common galleries. Along them are a games room, a living room, a library-study, as well as a terrace and garden on the third floor. Two buildings facing the river are given to apartments with gardens.
The building along Yauzskaya Street is proposed to be reconstructed to accommodate a three-star hotel.
Fourth place, 2nd degree Diploma
Elizaveta Lopatina. Department "Architecture of residential buildings"
Diploma project “Technological Institute. Moscow"
Moderators: B. A. Shabunin, G. V. Lebedeva, D. A. Karelin, Yu. A. Lobastova, L. A. Munchak
The site is located on the territory of the projected microdistrict in the Otrada district, between the main pedestrian boulevard and the Otrada park.
In such an environment, it is proposed to erect a snow-white building, in plan resembling a ridge with large teeth. Separate buildings of variable number of storeys are connected by a common stylobate part with a sloping pedestrian and green roof. From it grow beautiful, slightly curvilinear in plan, extended "teeth", the ends of which are completely glazed.
The white facade of the complex, facing the city, is cut through by narrow high windows, offset from each other in the spirit of the matrix.
Most of the public and administrative functions of the institute are concentrated on the first two floors, while most of the area is given directly to classrooms.
Fifth place, 3rd degree Diploma
Evgenia Miroshkina. Department "Architecture of residential buildings"
Diploma project “Multifunctional complex on Serebryanicheskaya embankment. Moscow"
Moderators: A. R. Vorontsov, T. B. Nabokova, M. E. Troyan, O. Yu. Suslova
The plot of 0.8 hectares is located on the Serebryanicheskaya embankment of the Yauza River.
The building has a complex silhouette, its number of storeys varies from 1 to 9 floors. In addition to housing, the complex includes a large cultural center with restaurants, galleries and showrooms. On its green operated roof is a beach for the residents of the complex. At the same time, the residential part is maximally isolated from the public. "Docking" occurs only on the eastern side, where the housing hangs over the amphitheater with a large console.
The proposed volumetric-spatial solution made it possible to form a central public square associated with the city square located on the embankment. The "green belt" from the square leads to the halls of temporary exhibitions and a summer cinema. The entire route is full of various open areas for performances, exhibitions and leisure activities.
*** Projects of the first round of the competition
At the first stage of the competition, the nominees worked on the concepts of the MARCHI pavilion stand - such a stand could be used by the institute in the future to participate in exhibitions and festivals. The participants of the competition worked for four days in the audience on the layout and sketch in hand-made graphic technique; work in a graphic editor on a computer became the participants' homework.
The winners were chosen by the artistic council for awarding the Moscow Architectural Institute Gold Medal, chaired by the rector of the institute Dmitry Shvidkovsky, the jury and experts also included teachers and heads of departments of the institute. The academic secretary of the artistic council Ksenia Sulim was the curator of the competition.
Stephen Hall received the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal, Herman Herzberger received the RIBA Gold Medal, and Michael Graves received the main award for Traditional Architects: the Driehaus Prize
