Markthal appeared in the city center, next to the Gothic church of Sint-Laurenskerk and Piet Blom's "cube houses". In the 1990s, a railway overpass was dismantled here, and a food market was deployed in the vacated space twice a week. But later, for reasons of sanitation, open markets for meat and fish were prohibited in Holland, and therefore it was decided to build a capital structure to sell food. In the 2004 competition, MVRDV architects won thanks to their innovative approach: their market was conceived as a lively consumption center, combined with apartments and a large parking lot.

In fact, Markthal (which means “covered market”) is a huge “arch” 40 m high, 120 m long and 70 m wide. It contains 228 apartments (of which 102 are rented, 126 are for sale; the area varies from 80 to 300 m2, that is, from 2 to 5 bedrooms, including 24 penthouses). All living rooms face outward, and kitchens, dining rooms and storerooms face inward, into the market space, but the interiors are protected from noise and odors by triple-glazed windows or openings in the floor.

The end facades of the building are completely transparent; steel cable nets are used as a frame for glazing. This allowed both to make the most of natural light and to visually link the interior of the market with the surroundings.

The outside of the building, like the area around it, is faced with gray stone: it serves as a neutral backdrop to the riot of color inside. On the inner surface of the arch, sheathed with perforated aluminum panels, there is a painting by artists Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam "Cornucopia" depicting market food, flowers and insects, which connects this monumental work (its area is 11,000 m2) with works by Dutch still life masters of the 17th century. The print quality is comparable to that of a glossy magazine.

At ground level, under the vault of the market, there are about 100 stalls selling a variety of food and drinks, from cheese to cappuccino, from affordable merchandise to rare delicacies. Also in Markthal there are 20 shops (all of them related to the theme of food - including crockery and wine shops), cafes and restaurants. The first underground level houses the Albert Heijn supermarket, the Etos household chemicals, cosmetics, etc. store and the Gall & Gall alcoholic beverages store. Below is a municipal garage for 1200 cars, and in 2015, the city plans to open a nearby parking lot for 800 bicycles. Also in 2015, the complex will open an educational center for healthy eating "World of taste".

Since it was in the area of today's Markthal that Rotterdam was founded a thousand years ago, visitors, moving along the central escalator, can get acquainted with the “vertical exhibition” arranged along it about the history of the city “The Ladder of Time”.

The project budget was 175 million euros. The building has received a BREEAM Very Good energy efficiency rating.
