RHEINZINK - 10 years on the Russian market
The new school building for the theater and cultural center, designed by Birmingham firm Assosiated Architects for the small town of Yarm in the north-east of England, dissolves into the surrounding nature - the school grounds in the historic center of the city are surrounded by trees and located on the banks of the Tees River. It is the river that creates the natural backdrop for the new building - and the blue-gray color (Analok 541) of the titanium-zinc RHEINZINK-prePATINA blaugrau, and the scaly façade pattern echo its flowing flow.
The project, which has won local and international awards, as well as the RIBA North-East Regional Award of the Royal Institute of British Architects, does not look like a classical theater center, it lacks dramatic architectural elements. It rather appeals to nature and the surrounding landscape, continuing the logic of the landscape with the texture of the zinc facade from RHEINZINK.
To create a spectacular pattern of the surface of the rectilinear parts of the facade, large panels of 600x450 mm were used. The zinc shell of the rounded part of the hall was made almost by hand - during the calculations it turned out that it is cheaper to bend each panel one edge at a construction site than to make them according to a given radius at the factory. In addition, to give the impression of a vertical pattern on the curved wall, the panels varied in size - the higher from the ground, the larger.
The theatrical character of the building is enhanced at night by additional lighting effects. The distance between the surface of the load-bearing wall and RHEINZINK panels is half a meter; In this space, between the building and its shell, there are three rows of LED lamps, which, depending on the evening program, can enliven the facade of the building, adding interactivity to it.
The scaly façade, composed of diamond-shaped hexagonal panels, creates the effect of a flexible and dynamic surface, culminating in the center's main space - a multifunctional hall, in the folds of the walls of which windows are hidden the full height of the building. The thin structure of the cladding made of a multitude of zinc panels with a total area of more than 2000 m2 forms a continuous curvature of the facade, which also extends into the interior of the large double-height hall in front of the main auditorium, once again emphasizing the connection of the building with the surrounding landscape.
The facades were made using the technique of large and small rhombuses - the panels are connected in such a way as to create a surface on which water flows from top to bottom and does not get inside, even in strong winds. The pitched roofs of the building are also made of zinc-titanium RHEINZINK using the double standing seam technique. The use of a diffusion membrane located behind the zinc-titanium cladding (or trim) and a vapor barrier film inside, in front of the insulation, further increase the energy efficiency of the entire building. So the new school is minimally dependent on external energy sources, being in harmony with the surrounding nature both architecturally and technologically.
The theater hall, the main attraction of the new building, is intended for various concerts, ranging from amateur school concerts to citywide performances. The importance of this space and the whole building for the development of the performing arts in one of the best private schools in England was also noted by the patroness of theater and music of the British royal house, Princess Alexandra of Kent, who agreed to give the hall her name.
