Julia Bedunova:

“The idea of creating such a map arose back in the era of Perestroika, when the possibility of displaying creative initiative had already appeared, and the economy was still planned. The essence of the plan was not to "split up" Moscow, showing its entire territory on a small scale, and the center as a separate inset - on a large scale, as is usually done for large cities. Instead, it was planned to place the entire Moscow within the Moscow Ring Road on one sheet, while enlarging the center, the most saturated with content: streets, lanes - and architectural monuments.

In traditional cartography, when the scale of the image does not change over the entire coverage of the territory, in the center of Moscow it was possible to display only the main highways, neglecting the overwhelming majority of streets and lanes.

I came up with the idea of creating a map of the capital's architectural monuments of variable scale, which would gradually decrease from the center to the outskirts, that is, according to professional canons, not maps, but diagrams. The state cartographic enterprise where I worked at the time approved the idea. The talented artist Timofey Frolov drew this base by hand on a Whatman paper in accordance with the then technology of preparing the image for publication (we had no idea at that time about computer graphics).

According to fellow cartographers, this framework is ideal for visual display of special content of any topic - cultural objects, business or various departments, concentrated mainly in the city center.

Thus, the reverse side of the map was freed up, where we placed plans of the most significant architectural ensembles of the capital. All drawings and plans of estates were made especially for this edition by Timofei Frolov.

The map showed all the architectural monuments that were at that time under state protection according to the materials of the State Inspectorate for the Protection of Architectural Monuments and Urban Planning of Moscow, a total of 566 objects. Their brief descriptions formed the text of the brochure accompanying the map. The publication was aimed at a wide range of readers interested in the history of the capital, therefore, all buildings were located not in administrative districts, but in sections corresponding to the main historically formed territories of the city, and within each section they were given in chronological order.

The text prepared by me was then highly appreciated by the reviewer - the Institute of the Theory of Architecture and Urban Planning. The consultant was at that time the candidate, and now the doctor of art history I. L. Busev-Davydov, she also wrote a short introduction, which, with minor changes and additions, was included in this publication.

The transition to a market economy did not allow the work begun to be brought to print. It was only in 2013 that I had the opportunity to return to the implementation of my long-standing idea. Now the map was compiled with the help of computer technologies by cartographer N. N. Ryzhkova. Significant professional, organizational and financial support was provided to me by my colleagues, who wished not to advertise themselves.

Based on the materials of the Moscow City Heritage Site, which were specified and verified by many sources, the list of architectural monuments was updated. Although it has almost doubled since the creation of the first version of the map (now there are more than 1000), some monuments are no longer in it - due to their irretrievable loss.

The main purpose of this publication was to draw attention to the problem of preserving the unique architectural appearance of our ancient capital. To show how beautiful Moscow is (that's why such a bright - red color of the quarters, such a memorable, original projection was chosen), how much it conceals in itself discoveries. And not a single, even at first glance, unremarkable monument should be lost by us, because otherwise we will not get a city where every stone is familiar to us, but a soulless space with which nothing connects us."
