House "Serpentine" is located in the city of Pantin near the French capital. The architect Émile Aillaud developed his project in the second half of the 1950s as part of the commissioned Le Courtilliers array of 1,700 apartments and two schools. Ayo, one of the prominent proponents of industrial housing, adhered to "social-romantic" ideas and tried to bring the greatest possible variety to his projects. Therefore, "Serpentine" with a length of 1060 m (this is one of the longest buildings in Europe) intricately bent a snake around a park with an area of 4 hectares, and also received a beautiful color of the facades.

However, by the end of the 20th century, Le Courtillier was dilapidated, and the size and layout of his apartments no longer suited most French people. As a result, it, like many other residential areas of the post-war period, has become a less prestigious and unattractive place to live. Given the number of such housing in France, the state is actively involved in the renovation of such areas. Le Courtillier was no exception, and in 2002 the RVA bureau was commissioned to reconstruct the Serpentine located there.

Unlike some other French panel housing modernization projects, such as the renovated Lacaton & Vassal Parisian bureau

of the Tour Bois Le Pretre tower, where the residents stayed with their apartments and did not even move during the renovation, Serpantine underwent a complete redevelopment and reconstruction (this, incidentally, worried the heritage defenders, who even managed to slow down the project) As a result, the length of the house was reduced from 1060 m to 970 m, out of more than 600 apartments, 513 remained, but the office of the management company was added; the width of the building increased from 8 m to 8.4 m.

At the same time, the apartments have become more spacious; during the redevelopment, only the facade walls and ceilings were preserved. A mechanical ventilation system, new electrical equipment appeared, kitchens and bathrooms were especially thoroughly updated. Walls, ceilings and floors have been redecorated. The height of the building remained unchanged: six floors, of which five are residential. Now there are twenty-one types of apartments in the house, all of them overlook the park, and almost all (with the exception of the "studios") also face the street.

A particularly important part of the project was the renovation of the façade. As mentioned above, Ayo paid great attention to its color, but by the time the reconstruction began, the cement plaster covering it was badly dilapidated, in addition, considerable damage to the original painting was caused by repeated repairs. Therefore, it was decided not to restore it, but to use facade panels, which also improved the quality of the building's thermal insulation.

The architects developed the facade design together with the famous graphic designer Pierre di Sciullo - Archi.ru already

wrote about him in connection with a project of a different kind, a memorial to those who fell in the First World War. In Panten, it was decided to cover the street facade with the same vertical gradient (from white on the 6th floor to pink on the second level), while the house faces the “courtyard” park with a long horizontal ribbon of saturated colors flowing into each other, mainly - blue and red, and the color change marks the location of the entrances. The tones flow into each other with the help of the "pixel mosaic" motif.

The first, after three years of design and experimentation, began the reconstruction of the facade - in 2011, and in 2012 the building and the park itself were taken over (landscape architects Agence Vincent Pruvost were responsible for it). All works were completed in 2015.
