The winner of the International Workshop "Space for Education of the Future", which took place from February 1 to February 10 in Makhachkala, has been announced. The work of 'PIC - Peri Innovation Center' - Anna Petrova, Patricia Urlan and Jeffrey Stevens, who worked under the guidance of the tutor Hiroki Matsura, a partner of the Dutch bureau MASA, was recognized as the best concept of the educational and cultural center "Perimeter". The winning project, according to the workshop initiators: Ziyavudin Magomedov's PERI Charitable Foundation and the MARSH Lab Center for Architectural Initiatives, will be implemented.

The workshop was attended by thirty young architects from the USA, Italy, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Belarus, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Kazakhstan and Russia, selected by experts from almost a hundred applications received. In just ten days, the participants, divided into eight teams, led by Yaroslav Kovalchuk, Hiroki Matsura, Narine Tyutcheva and Petr Popov, worked on the concepts of the educational and cultural center "Perimeter".

Participants were required to create a clear and implementable building design for the site between Abubakarova Street and Makhachkala City Park. Nearby - the house of Rasul Gamzatov, a little to the side - the main city square. The center should house a large public area, conference rooms, exhibition spaces, a social design school, a creative technology center and a robotics laboratory, a support center for gifted youth, coworking and other spaces for innovative educational projects. In addition to the complex functional program, it was necessary to take into account the urban planning context and the special climate of Makhachkala with a very hot summer, a sharp change in weather during the day and strong winds.

As one of the project's tutors, Narine Tyutcheva, said, the first stage and three days of work were devoted to the study of urban communities and culture of Makhachkala, the town-planning features of the site, as well as modern educational methods in the country and in the world. The participants devoted the remaining seven days to design. In recent days, no one slept - work did not stop day or night. The projects prepared by February 10 were presented by the participants at an open presentation.

According to the jury member and head of MARSH Lab, Elena Gonzalez, it was not easy to choose the winner. The jury was divided; additional meetings had to be held in the format of video conferences. The rector of MARSH Evgeny Ass also admitted that the winner was completely unclear. Nevertheless, he himself gave the highest score to the winning project - for a clear idea and respect for the traditions and culture of the city. In addition, a new "hybrid" format that combined the educational genre of a workshop and a real competition with subsequent implementation, according to Evgeny Ass, is not only new and for the first time proposed by MARSH Lab, but could also become a good alternative to the usual competitive practice.

Polina Filippova, Executive Director of the PERI Foundation, promised that the project would begin no later than June this year. The winners will continue to work on the project together with the involved professional bureau and will carry out the author's support of the construction. The further participation of the tutor of the team, Hiroki Matsura, is also implied. The completion of all work is scheduled for 2017.

We present all the projects developed during the workshop:

The concept is based on the rethinking of the traditional for Dagestan residential development. Therefore, the project actively uses such characteristic techniques as terraces uniting several residential buildings of different generations of the same family, and closed courtyards, which are often found in modern Makhachkala. Another important detail is the use of Akushin sandstone, from which the vast majority of architectural monuments were built in the capital of Dagestan.

The educational center occupies an elongated stretch between the central park and the residential area. Structurally, it is a complex composition of separate but interconnected functional blocks. The main entrance pavilion faces the park. This is also where the glass volume of the PERI innovation center, which is slightly displaced in depth, accommodates coworking spaces, meeting rooms, laboratories and offices. The central part of the building is given over to public functions. It was decided to locate the children's educational center closer to a quiet residential area. All blocks of different heights and configurations are interconnected by a system of landscaped courtyards, which are strung on a single pedestrian axis that allows you to walk through the building. Terraces are organized on wide ledges, from where the best views of the city center, park and mountain landscape open up.

It is proposed to use natural stone for decoration. The combination of polished and rocky Akushin sandstone with large glass spans on the facades makes the image authentic and modern at the same time. Crushed sandstone is also used inside the building to fill the floor, as well as for landscaping - as a paving.

Hiroki Matsura

partner of the architectural bureau MAXWAN and MASA:

“This is a subtle, restrained and simple design, which at the same time strongly and powerfully reflects the new era that is coming to Makhachkala. This project is a perfect example of a simple gesture that achieves maximum impact."

Yaroslav Kovalchuk

teacher at MARSH school:

“The project was overseen by Hiroki Matsura, and maybe that's why it turned out to be very Japanese. Multiple courtyards and rooftop terraces form a single pedestrian axis that cuts through the entire building. The motion script looks very theatrical. It is important that the project is closely related to the Dagestan traditions. The shape interprets traditional terraced housing, while the finishes are proposed to use local sandstone."

The building of the educational center occupies the entire lengthy area, preserving a narrow passage from the side of Rasul Gamzatov's house, connecting Abubakarov Street with the park. The volume is an elongated glass parallelepiped with a flat roof and slightly cut ends. There is a city square in front of the central entrance from the side of the park. On the ground floor, there are multi-lighted public spaces that smoothly flow into one another. From above, they are covered with a complex spatial structure, which the authors called "intelligent cloud". The main educational functions are located inside the "cloud" - coworking, laboratories, classrooms.

The authors also thought out the concept of an energy-efficient supply system for the center with thoughtful lighting, natural ventilation, air recovery and cooling, the use of solar panels and heat pumps. The abundance of glass surfaces not typical for the local climate is justified by the use of a special type of glass to prevent overheating of the building.

The jury members liked the modern look of the building. However, glass, being a symbol of lightness and openness, according to the jury, is not very suitable for the climatic conditions of Makhachkala. Such a solution will require additional measures to protect from the sun. In addition, a wind tunnel effect may occur between the volume of the center and the house of Rasul Gamzatov in an abandoned air corridor due to strong winds.

The project is distinguished by its particular simplicity and logic of building space. Its base is formed by three separate one-story blocks. Two of them - office and residential - are located closer to the street. The children's educational center is shifted towards the park. The connecting element is a common four-level space in which all public areas are located, including the entrance hall, exhibition galleries and a conference room. There are also coworking spaces and laboratories connected to the conference hall by a library ramp. You can get into the building both from the residential area and directly from the park. The first floor looks massive and solid thanks to the decoration from local Dagestan limestone. The central volume, which rises above the base, is faced with structural frosted glass.

The jury noted the authors' desire to maintain continuity by using local building materials. I also liked the attempt to create a modern architecture that meets the functional purpose of the future educational center.

The four-storey building is divided horizontally according to function. On the ground floor there is a center for additional education for schoolchildren and a public area with an exhibition hall and a cafe. There is also a through passage through the building from the park to Abubakarov Street. The second and third floors are designed to accommodate all the necessary premises of the innovation center. The exploited roof has been turned into a public space with a system of small pavilion modules that can serve as platforms for Internet communities, chess or book clubs. The device of the roof, thus, symbolically recreates the residential buildings habitual for Dagestan. Small houses not only occupy the roof, they penetrate the park in the form of separate pavilions. The complex terraced facade of the building looks towards the park. When viewed from the street, on the contrary, the facade is practically devoid of plasticity. It is made of mirrored glass that reflects the city.

According to the jury, this project has become one of the most provocative. The experts called the reflection on the theme of the mountain villages of Dagestan a positive moment. However, in the project, the problem of the air corridor between the existing house of Rasul Gamzatov and the projected building remained unresolved.

The composition takes into account the orientation of the site to the park and residential area. In front of the city square there is a four-tiered "tower" of frosted glass; there is an observation deck on the roof of the tower. A two-story volume faces a quiet street on the opposite side - a response to the surrounding low-rise buildings. The two volumes are united by a system of green courtyards and public spaces that serve as a continuation of the park and at the same time connect the new complex with the historical house of Rasul Gamzatov.

Glazed parts of the building open to the city alternate with blind ones, where private living areas are located with access to open terraces. On the first, fully glazed floor, there is a foyer, exhibition and conference rooms, a classroom and a cafe. The second floor of the tower is entirely occupied by housing. Offices, meeting rooms and laboratories are assigned to the upper tier with a high two-story space. The training center occupies a block facing Abubakarov Street.

The building of the educational center should connect the park with the residential area. A narrow and highly elongated volume of the simplest form with a gable roof is bounded on both sides by long pedestrian streets leading to the park. Its shell consists entirely of double-layer glass. Between the layers of glass, the author was proposed to create a real greenhouse with living plants, which is why the climate inside should be comfortable all year round. The transparent openwork volume, lined with a grid of bindings, does not argue with the surroundings, but claims to become a new architectural accent.

Inside, the space follows the logic of traditional Dagestan housing with alternating open and closed zones formed by mobile partitions. In the center of the building is a transformable conference room equipped with a system of lifting plungers that form various scenarios for the use of space. On the second level, there are children's studios and coworking spaces with an additional entrance from the street. The third floor is occupied by residences and laboratories. Upstairs, under a glass roof, there is a library and a prayer room.

A simple rectangular volume connects the park with Abubakarov Street, providing a through passage. Inside the minimalistic glass and perforated metal shell, there is a multi-level space. The building is divided into three parts - public, administrative and courtyard. The main part of the courtyard, located strictly in the center, is covered with a transformable roof. In dry weather, the roof retracts and the courtyard can be used for lectures, exhibitions and other outdoor events. On rainy days with a closed roof, the site can be used, in particular, as a cinema.

There are rainwater harvesting systems, natural ventilation, sun protection, installation of heat pumps, as well as the use of local building materials, for example, natural Dagestan stone in interior decoration.

To the jury members, this project, carried out by the students of the MARCH school, seemed the most romantic. The experts considered the deep research and the topic, which is based on the Dagestan folk tale, interesting. An educational center is a place that can completely change a person. This is very similar to a fairy tale with transformations. Inside, like in a magic box, a complex and varied world of the future has been created, while outside the glass structure practically dissolves into the surrounding buildings.

In this project, the educational center is a portal connecting the park with the city, public space with private space, and old Makhachkala with a new and actively developing one. Structurally, the complex consists of two multidirectional blocks connected by a common passage. The building facing the park is occupied by a conference room, coworking space and exhibition galleries. Public spaces gradually flow into one another, culminating in a green courtyard. The volume facing the residential area is intended for offices, residences and a training center.

The jury noted the simplicity and brevity of the project. Its main difference from other concepts is horizontal zoning: everything related to public functions is assigned to the side of the park, and with educational functions - to the side of the street. ***
