The prize is awarded every two years to young architects who have already received recognition and who, according to the organizers, have outstanding potential for further development.

This year, 40 candidates from 18 countries were nominated for the award, but Aravena was unanimously selected by a jury chaired by former Architecture Magazine editor-in-chief Reed Kroloff. They were attracted by his desire to solve social problems with architectural means and his successes on this path (for example, the construction of affordable houses for slum dwellers as part of his work with the Elemental S. A. association), as well as an almost poetic understanding of architectural craft and form. In their opinion, he is clearly "on the road to greatness", and it is precisely such young professionals that the "Marcus Prize" is called upon to encourage.

Alejandro Aravena will receive $ 50,000 from the organizers, and another $ 50,000 will be used by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning to organize an Aravena workshop and series of public lectures and workshops there in the spring 2010 semester.

The Marcus Prize is awarded by the Marcus Corporation Foundation, the charitable arm of this hospitality and entertainment corporation. Its headquarters are in Milwaukee, so the award - through the laureate's teaching at a local university - should help improve the quality of architecture and urban development projects there.

The first edition of the prize was awarded in 2005 by MVRDV, the second - by the Berlin studio Barkow + Leibinger Architects.
