UPD 2016-28-07: Stanton Williams and Asif Khan became the winners of the competition.
Last week, six applicants were announced to win the competition for the new building of the Museum of London in Smithfield. It is planned that the museum will occupy the currently unused historical buildings on the territory of Smithfield Market, located 400 meters from the current museum building. Construction is due to start in 2017, the move will take place by 2021, and then the museum will vacate its old building at the Roman wall. £ 130-150 million have been allocated for the construction. Now the jury will have to choose the winner among the short-listed participants.
These are the commands:
- BIG (Denmark) + Hawkins / Brown (UK)
- Caruso St John (UK)
- Diener & Diener Architekten (Switzerland) + Sergison Bates Architects (UK)
- Lacaton & Vassal Architectes (France) + Pernilla Ohrstedt Studio (UK)
- Stanton Williams (UK) + Asif Khan (UK)
- studio Milou architecture (France)
The new space will allow the museum to receive up to two million visitors a year and significantly expand its exposition; after reconstruction, the museum expects to become one of the most visited in London.
The architects presented diverse projects that allow not only to create a memorable image of the museum, but also to recreate a fragment of historical London: some of the old buildings of the market are planned to be preserved. All entries will be shown at the Museum of London for an exhibition that runs until 5 August. The winner will be announced this summer.
