The architects' task was to follow the concept of DeafSpace, which was developed and tested at the university: it takes into account the perception of space by the deaf and people with hearing impairments, for whom it is not always easy to navigate in the environment created by the hearing for the hearing.



The new building adjoins the historic campus (Gallaudet University was founded in 1864); As in old buildings, brick plays an important role in the appearance of a new building. The competition project also includes a series of public spaces, including those outside the campus: these will be the first zones in the mainstream of DeafSpace in a typical urban environment.
