Requirements for the projects of facade solutions for buildings 3 and 7 and the interior of building 2 of the former Pravda printing plant alerted many. The initiator of the competition was the Kerama-Marazzi finishing materials company, and one of its conditions was the use of porcelain stoneware, a material controversial in the case when it comes to a monument of constructivism, which we have already discussed in detail with experts. The rather violent reaction of the professional community to the prospect of facing the facades of buildings of the 1930s with porcelain stoneware obviously influenced both the participants of the competition and the jury, making the main topic of the competition the question of "how to combine the incongruous" or even "how to beautifully bypass the competition task" … Which definitely added both complexity and interest.

Most of the authors diligently distanced themselves from the notorious shoulder blades and panels, ensuring the integrity of the original facade. The jury, in turn, chose the most delicate project - apparently making the main criterion not so much the rehabilitation of porcelain stoneware as the preservation of the old building. So the competition had two creative results:

1. The architects practiced respecting the works of the 1930s, which are part of the Panteleimon Golosov complex, and the jury supported their initiative. The conclusion is as follows: for a creative person there is always a way out, even if you were offered to combine the incongruous;

2. Being limited by their own decision to preserve historical buildings, the authors of the projects paid maximum attention to the arrangement of the space at the Pravda Combine, thus paying tribute to the popular, not to say fashionable, theme of transforming urban space.

The winners found an elegant solution to the problem of incompatibility between porcelain stoneware and 1930s architecture. They proposed to restore most of the facades in the original materials, and to use porcelain stoneware for new objects on the territory, treating the style in which the building was built with the utmost respect.

“The updated Pravda will look almost the same as it did. Perhaps that is why the jury awarded us the first place,”joked Vladimir Kuzmin from Pole Design. The winners proposed to restore the facades in original materials, to use paint on the reinforced plastered surface. And apply the finishing made of porcelain stoneware pointwise - for the basement and stair railings.

“Our concept is that we were as tactful as possible to the solution of the facade, which is part of the cultural heritage,” explains the co-author of the project Nikolai Kaloshin. “As an option, we proposed a ceramic granite cladding for the niches of the facade of building 3. But it should not go beyond these boundaries, because the building was originally supposed to have completely different materials.”

The rhythm of the facade of building 3 "Field-Design" was emphasized by a high portal in gray porcelain stoneware. The columns do not overlap the original blades, but are attached to them with brackets at a distance. There are ramps leading to the entrance from both sides - a kind of homage to Le Corbusier. A light box is installed at the top of the portal, large posters or a screen canvas will fit inside, and the entire facade can be turned into a screen for video mapping.

Two gray columns visually balance the multitude of low, bright pylons along the opposite building 7. They transform the infinitely elongated building into a proportional one and make it easier to navigate. There are also light boxes in the upper part of the small columns; in the dark they function as street lamps. The pylons are faced with six colors of porcelain stoneware, and the basement of the building is gray, matching the facade paint.

In the design project of the interior, all the elements that have survived to this day are preserved, right down to the details of the engineering equipment that has not been used for a long time. In some places, the authors keep on the floor nostalgic brooms and perforated metal tiles, although most of the floor would still have to be done in new materials.

The coloristic solution of the interior refers to the era when the Pravda Combine was designed. It includes three pure "primary" colors: red, yellow, and blue; the achromatic background for them will be gray. Bright vertical frames appear on the walls of the long corridor, which merge into a rectangle in perspective.

The constructivist purity of geometric shapes is reproduced by the interior object, which the designers called the "Cube of Truth". In fact, this is a transformer made of many small cubes, which, if necessary, turns into a lecture hall, a small exhibition hall, and a storage area. The cubes are decorated with ceramic tiles that mimic a newspaper strip.

For artificial lighting, a system of pendant LED lamps is used. In addition, the authors proposed to restore the original skylights on the roof of the building. *** Second place

The project also does not imply the facing of historical facades with new materials. Porcelain stoneware is used in the decoration of new environmental objects on the territory, similar to the parts of the giant Lego construction set lost in the courtyard. A gallery has been assembled from such details - it begins at building 3, every now and then deliberately gets out of rhythm, but overcomes the entire length of building 7 and forms the space of the inner street. An angular blue "cloud" has caught on to the overhead passage, at the entrance to the third building, yellow cubes have formed into a recreation area, on a concrete platform, toy Kremlin battlements have become the fence of the hanging garden. Under them, as if broken, lie the orange modules of the stage and screen.

In the interior, the walls are in gray tones. To them are colored spots attached to bright elements that also pretend to be forgotten, but already in an empty workshop: a green elongated podium, red rectangular frames, an orange amphitheater-mountain that looks like someone did not have the patience to assemble it completely. Moreover, all of them, as befits the details of the designer, have a flexible scenario of use.

“We had the idea to create an urban space inside the building. Corridors are streets with their own hierarchy, entrances to premises are a kind of “facades”, and the main workshop where we made space for exhibitions is a piazza,”says Azat Akhmadullin. On the floor of the long corridors, a rubberized coating is provided so that you can move on scooters that hang here along the walls. Highlighted and "stopping points" - with hanging chairs and vertical gardening.

In the concept of Akhmadullin Architects, the facades are undergoing significant, in comparison with the previous two projects, recycling, although formally the original plastic has been preserved. Building 3 is faced with fiber cement panels, and the inner planes of its vertical niches are faced with dark gray porcelain stoneware. The authors took the path of stylization, strengthening the relief of the shoulder blades and emphasizing the connection with poster agitation - for this, a red color was actively introduced, contrasting with the "newspaper" light and dark gray. The slopes and bindings of windows, and the upper slopes of facade niches, fire escapes and framing of entrance portals are spelled out in red.

Bureau "PlanAR" proposed to supplement the facade of building 3 on the level of the first floor with a red structure of three parts in the shape of the letter "P". It restores the symmetry of the entrance group, where the door was originally shifted to the left. Along building 7, the authors placed a module with balconies, which jumps in a three-beat rhythm of the march, and looks like an allusion to constructivism. The walls in the interior are decorated with the words "petite", "nonparelle" and "tsitsero", which instantly refer to the typefaces of Soviet newspapers and do not allow you to forget the biography of the building.

Archiproba's project does not address the past directly, through the avant-garde, but appeals to the memories of those who were children during the Soviet era: the style of the Pravda inscription above the entrance resembles the old neon signs of old cinemas. The architects proposed to carefully restore the historical facade, to cover it with plaster with a texture similar to the original one, and to recreate the original frame frame for the window openings. ***

Bureau Kontora called the building "the gray machine of truth by Panteleimon Golosov", and the description of the project made it look like a revolutionary manifesto. In the same revolutionary manner, they suggested breaking the new Kerama Marazzi tiles before use, which made the organizers of the competition shudder - even the mention of Gaudi did not save the situation. ***

The consortium came up with a very lightweight, almost invisible solution; in any case, not as colorful as everyone else's. According to the concept, the main identity of the new design should be a certain pattern, represented by a mosaic of tiled squares - yes, of porcelain stoneware - connected by a puzzle. With this pattern, the authors decorated doors, visors, flower beds, benches and other elements of public spaces. The design code based on the pattern suggested by the authors and large navigation elements is used both outside and inside. Pedestrian and motor roads are fenced off with urban furniture for the sake of the safety of movement around the territory.

*** And there will be no implementation

Actually, even when the competition task as such was discussed, it was known on the sidelines that the competition was most likely a “paper” competition, aimed only at demonstrating the possibilities of using the material on a specific example, and no projects were planned. However, as soon as the winners were announced, "PSN Group" - the company "managing the projects of the Pravda"

to declare separately that there are no plans to implement projects or reconstruct the plant's buildings. And then she completely demanded that the publications remove messages about the results of the competition from the news feed.

Which probably surprised many, since so-called concept or idea contests are not uncommon in themselves, although it is customary there to more explicitly and immediately announce the absence of implementation plans. According to Sergei Georgievsky, director of the Center for Strategic Development Agency that conducted the competition, “Professional competition is an instrument of dialogue between the city, the developer and the expert community. In the case of objects with a significant history, the competition allows you to find the most balanced decision in relation to a significant object. The work turned out to be very professional - this is a great victory that will have a positive impact on the future development of the facility. In this we are supported by the Moskomarkhitektura and the Arch Council”.

So no one planned to implement the competitive projects. Although it must be admitted, in the course of discussing the competition, this was repeatedly said: the district and the plant certainly need to be updated. In the meantime, the competition has turned out to be more sonorous than the usual events of the manufacturers of materials - perhaps due to some scandalousness of the issue of reconstruction, and perhaps due to the decision to hold it on a real example. But completely "paper".

This is what the Pravda Combine looks like now:
