It should be noted that the level of projects since the previous competition has significantly increased: the total number of applications in 2014 was 6103, while the jury was able to admit only 2514 projects to participate in the competition. This year the total number of applications was 5085, and 3574 of them were verified by international experts.

The wide response from architects around the world confirms the status of the LafargeHolcim Awards as the premier international competition for sustainable construction. The number of participants from Russia has almost doubled since the last competition: 112 applications in 2017 compared to 67 in 2014. In the European region, Russia is one of the obvious leaders in terms of the number of projects, yielding first place only to France. The most active architects and designers have been recognized in a competition in the Asia-Pacific region: one third of all international applications came from this part of the world.

Another feature of this year's competition is that the number of projects in the main nomination for professional architects equaled the number of applications in the New Generation category, designed to promote ideas of students and young professionals. According to the organizers of the competition, this indicates the formation of a new wave of emerging architects, engineers and designers who are interested in projects in the field of sustainable construction. The largest number of innovative ideas came from participants from Indonesia (334), India (159), Nicaragua (103), Egypt (87) and China (75).
